Except in rare cases, you do not pluralize with an apostrophy.
Dropping out should not be an option. She got lapped and it was all over. At least move out to lane two and let the leaders go by then drop out. SF would have run a second faster for every runner she had to go around.
In what cases DO you pluralize with an apostrophe?
Acronyms, for one.
I think numerals, too, as in "1960's."
Cut it out.

In the age of professional running, DNF is far more prevalent. It has become an occupational hazard. You see it more often in marathons but you do see it at shorter distances also. "Live to run another day."

I believe that is becoming accepted as it happens so much, but I believe that 1960s is correct. The confusion stems from the abbreviation the '60s, which does require an apostrophe.
Slatteries'?

What would be the correct possessive form for a name that ends in s? Like, I have a friends named Miles. Is it Miles's house or Miles' house?
Or what if it's the possessive of a family name that ends in s. So, Dwight Thomas and his family are the Thomases. If I'm talking about their backyard, is it the Thomases's yard? That seems wordy.
Miles's house
Correct.

"Thomases' yard" With the "s" added for pluralization, no additional "s" needs to be added.

They both looked to be in better shape in January than they do today. I expected great years for both of them.

Also, "Three" rather than "3." When starting a sentence with a number, it should always be spelled out rather than written in numeral form.
