I have pretty intense pain right on the ball of my heel in the fleshy tissue where it would seem to connect to my achilles tendon. It is pretty low on the heel, not up toward the Achilles as much.I limp a bit through the first mile or so and then it begins to loosen up and by 3 miles or so I don't even notice it. Getting out of bed in the mornings is hell and I pretty much favor it all day until it gets warmed up a bit.I had a pretty bad calf injury about three months ago on the same leg.Has anyone had anything like this before and could it be related to that initial calf injury? Thanks in advance for your help.
It sounds like the achilles base is very tender. I had the exact same thing (but much worse) and am fully recovered. As someone who tried to run through it, you are playing with fire. I tore my tendon when I was at your stage, during a track race and was out for 2 years. Take the time off now and let it fully heal (it will heal with proper rest, treatment), otherwise you will struggle with it indefinitely.
Don't worry about your fitness. You will get it back soon enough. But you can only be so fast with a hampered achilles. When my soreness finally went away (after the tear), I was instantly much faster.
P.S. - I also had the calf injury about 3 mos beforehand, believe it or not. My belief is that there was a flexiblity issue. Keep the calves and achilles (but don't allow sharp pain) flexible during your rest through good stretching. It will pay off huge when you run again. With regards to specific treatments, I cannot say for sure. I did follow up on my injury treatment like I should have. Remember, if guys like Sullivan and McMullen take time off for this injury and return to elite competition, then the rest of us should nurse this injury too.
