I'm in Ireland with Shaheen, and I read the article about Kenyan changing citizenship.
I'm really disturbed by the bullshits that many important persons of athletics continue to say about this problem, without knowing the reality.
So, I want to explain very well the situation : FACTS, not opinions.
1) Qatar was n. 3 in World Cross Country Championships with THE SAME ATHLETES OF 3 YEARS AGO, having only one new (FELIX KIBORE), that changed last year in June, after preparing in 2007 for winning a medal for Kenya in WJCh in 10,000m, and discovering, in Nairobi, that was entered in 5,000m for problems of communications with the responsible of the Province.
2) The athletes moving from Kenya to Qatar were the following :
a) Stephen Cherono (Saaeed Shaheen) in 2003
b) Albert Chepkurui (Ahmed Hassan Abdullah) in 2003
c) Nicholas Kemboi in 2005
d) David Nyaga (Daham Bashir) in 2005
e) Richard Yatich (Mubarak Shami) in 2005
f) James Kwalia in 2004 (September)
g) Thomas Kipkosgei (Thamer Ali Kamal) in 2005
h) Kipkemboi Katui (Jamal Bilal Salem) in 2005
i) Daniel Kemboi (Essa Rashed) in 2005
l) Felix Kibore in 2007
m) Charles Bett in 2007
3) ALL THE ATHLETES MOVING TILL 2007 HAD AN OFFICIAL LETTER OF NO OBJECTION FROM KENYAN FEDERATION.
4) The performances of the Athletes coming from Kenya, BEFORE and AFTER their new nationality, were the following :
Cherono - Shaheen : 7:58.10 - 7:53.63 (World Record)
Chepkurui - Hassan : 26:38 - 26:58
Katui - Bilal : 8:02 - 7:30.67 / 13:19 - 13:06
D. Kemboi - Rashed : 14:06 - 13:16 / Nothing - 27:20
Kwalia : 7:28.28 - 7:37 / Asian Games Winner and injured
N. Kemboi : 26:30.03 - 26:51 and injured
Kipkosgei - Thamer Ali : Nothing - 8:20 steeple
Nyaga - Bashir : 3:36.03 - 3:31.04
Yatich - Shami : Nothing - 2:07:19 and Silver in WCh
Kibore : 13:22 - 13:21 / Nothing (next 10000 in Hengelo)
Bett : 13:58 - 13:25
5) NEVER QATAR asked to somebody younger than 18-19 years (officially, normally Kenyans are 2-3 years older than their Passport) to go to Qatar.
6) Don't put Qatar and Bahrein in the same pott. The behavior of the two Countries is very different : Bahrein NEVER spoke with Kenyan Federation, Qatar did everything in official way
7) There are more stranger athletes in some European Country (like Spain, now Turky, France, for example) than in Qatar
8) It's not true that, for changing, the athletes received money. Also Shaheen changed WITHOUT ANY MONEY, only for being sure about a better assistance and not to go thru trials for the top Championships
9) In a sport as Soccer, Basket, Volley, are the Clubs having money, not the Federations. This means that the best players CAN JOIN CLUBS OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIES WITHOUT CHANGING THEIR CITIZENSHIP
10) In an Individual Sport, only few Federations can pay some money for athletes competing for them. That's the reason because, IF YOU ARE A POOR AFRICAN THAT CAN CHANGE HIS LIFE USING SPORT, you have to chose this situation, when possible. I work with these athletes everyday, and I look for their future, NOT FOR THE FUTURE OF THEIR COUNTRY. Everybody wants to be proud when an athlete from his Country is able to win a medal, BUT NOBODY WANTS TO HELP THEM IN PROFESSIONAL WAY. So, athletes are OBJECTS for satisfying people, BUT THEY ARE ALONE IN THEIR JOB, and politicians want to use their image only when they win, without helping when they need.
I'm completely against this IPOCRISY.
11) I'm friend of Odriozola, but I want to ask him : If Fasuba and a lot of other athletes go to call him for changing citizenship, IS NOT THAT THEY LOOK FOR BETTERING THEIR CONDITIONS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THEIR BEST ?
Is it a fault if somebody having talent WANTS TO GO WHERE IS POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP THIS TALENT ?
Why the best African students want to go to US or to Europe for their University ?
12) So, I'm tired to read a lot of stupidities about this problem, ONLY WHEN QATARI ATHLETES (always the same) ARE ABLE TO WIN SOMETHING. I know how much we work (also for Kenyans, I have many of them in Kenyan Team) for having results, I know how much we have to fight for organizing something in Countries that don't know how to solve several problems, or don't have money enough for solving.
AND I KNOW THAT I LOOK FOR THE BEST PERSONAL SOLUTION OF THE INDIVIDUAL PROBLEMS, not interested IF THE ATHLETES WORKING WITH ME ARE KENYANS, UGANDANS, QATARIS or TANZANIANS. In my mind, I LOOK FOR THE PERSONS, NOT FOR BIG COMPANIES OR NATIONS THAT WANT TO USE THE ATHLETES, NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR THEM
