Hey there
I am a male with a bachelors degree, who is currently enrolled in a masters program in elementary and special education. It is a dual degree program.
I am considering dropping the special education portion of the degree, and simply pursuing elementary education. I have definite plans to continue on for a 30 credit certification program in literacy education, to certify me as a reading specialist afterwards. I however, am considering dropping special education because I feel my heart is not into. I know full well I would not have an interest in ever teaching a strictly special education classroom, but saw it beneficial to inclusive classrooms, conducting assessments on "at-risk" students, and marketability for myself when searching for jobs.
I figure since there are surely some teachers, and possibly, administrators here on the board, I was wondering if you could advise me as to whether or not dropping that portion would significantly put me at a disadvantage in the hiring process. I am, as mentioned a male, seeking to teach at the elementary level, with at the time of completion of my masters degree, 3 years working for an educational publishing company.
Thanks.
