I'm siding with Boulder dude on this one. Because he is right, Wetmore is absolutely the best coach in America currently right now period. Its maybe not just all to his credit but he knows how to use the environment in Boulder to produce fast guys in the 5 and 10 better than anyone else, period.
Anyone is completely ignorant or blind as a bat not to realize this. And if you think he's a jerk because he tells his athletes how it really is and when they're f***ing up, realize this, that his athletes don't care because they want to know the truth. That's why they chose him as their coach. What's politically correct or "emotionally healthy" is not always directly related to running fast. Our society and culture in this country obviously works against us in competing at the highest levels in this sport. So its not surprising that people get bent out of shape when someone who knows what it takes has opinions that they don't agree with.
As far as comparing him to other coaches, (Smith, Gagliano, McDonnell, Lannana) in recent history Wetmore's success rate dwarfs the others. The guys that go there always improve tremendously. Yeah he's had a handful of Footlocker winners, but so have those other coaches. And Goucher, Torres, and Ritzenhein have run better in the 5000 than any Footlocker Winners other than Kennedy. How many Footlocker winners have Lannana, Gags, Smith, and McDonnell got all together and tell me how many of all those guys ran sub-13:30? Rueben Reina of Arkansas is the only one I can come up with. And among other athletes from those programs I can recall Trautmann, Ryan Wilson, Joe Falcon, and Jon Riley. I don't think Smith has has had anyone do anything of that level other than Hacker and Dobert and look at all that talent he's recruited over the years.
Wetmore is the man for the guys looking to run with the rest of the world. The rest of the guys can concentrate on their conference champions and NCAA All-Americans.
