Marty Glickman. Wasn't taken on the 1936 U.S. Olympic team...allegedly because of not wanting to offend Hitler..who knows, but Jesse Owens got the job done. Very fast sprinter and later sports announcer.
Coilin Powell is Jewish.
This comes up every year or so . . . .
First, Colin Powell was a "shabbos goy," meaning he did tasks for Jewish neighbors that they couldn't do on Saturdays. He is not Jewish.
I think everyone knows the Chariots of Fire story, where Harold Abrahams fits in.
All Jewish track lists should start with Irena Szewinska
First female to medal in 4 Olympics in running events (Merlene Ottey is the other person ?). First woman under 50 seconds in the 400. Had incredible winning streaks in both the 200 and 400 in the 1970's, and I believe is a high ranking official in the IAAF.
Lawrence "Lon" Myers was the best sprinter ever pre-1900. He was the first amateur to break 50 seconds in the 400, and was unbeatable in the 100-200-400 for many years during the 1880's-1890's.
Deena Kastor wasn't the only Jewish female track athlete for the US in 2004 - Jillian Schwartz represented the US in the pole vault.
Many of the fastest Jewish folks are emigrants from Eastern Europe to Israel. The fastest Jewish person ever, for what that's worth, is Alex Porkhomonskiy who emigrated from the Soviet Union and has run 10.20 (not bad for a white dude). Right behind his is Tommy Kafiri, an emigrant from Hungary, who has run 10.23. The Israeli national 4x100 record is 38.8, not too shabby for a tiny country with 7 million people.
Dave Segal of Britain represented GB in the 1960 Olympics in the 4x100 (bronze medal) and was ranked as high as #8 by TF&N in the 200/220.
Elias Katz was the Jewish member of the Flying Finns, taking silver for Finland in 1924 (steeplechase). He was chosen to be Israel's head coach for the 1948 Olympics.
Gerry Ashworth, the alternate who was thrown in at the last second in 1964, won a gold in the 4x100 thanks to Bob Hayes. If you watch the race, Gerry is still wearing his warm-up t-shirt underneath his uniform, running in 2nd. Ashworth is still the school record holder at Dartmouth in the 200m, and is a Masschusetts native (Haverhill !).
The Mondscheins of decathlon fame and pole vaulting are in.
The Sam Stoller/Marty Glickman thing is a controversy worth its own thread. Stoller was the NCAA champion in the 100y in 1937, after being in the shadow of Jesse Owens his 1st three years.
Milton Green, the track captain at Harvard, was won of the best hurdlers in the country but boycotted 1936 for obvious reasons.
Allen Tolmich was AAU champion 4 times in the hurdles but they were during war years (1937-41); he didn't compete in the Olympics.
Its a pretty small list. Zhanna Bloch would be in but she has been implicated in illegal drug use. Lillian Copeland was a world class thrower in the 1930's, but also was part of a world record in the women's 4x100. There are a few others I've missed.
Marcus O'Sullivan is Jewish, from the Jewish ward in Ireland, I forgot the exact name.
Colin Powell is Jewish. He looks very Semitic, like Yassar Arafat.
F*** YOU!
Dan Middleman -
It was only a matter of time until some sorry asshole shot his mouth off, and here it is. How sad.
Its the moops, not the moors.
Deena Kastor
Joe Jacobs
Wow, someone actually moderated the thread and pulled an offensive post! Good on ya!
Marty "fastest kid on the block" Glickman is defitnely worth its own thread. He actually was not left off the team. He made the trip to Berlin I believe and then was left off the relay for obvious reasons. I saw an interview with him later and he said Jesse Owens initially refused to take the spot but Mar realized in the 1936 USA, Blacks had to do what they were told. I have a patient who knew Marty as sportscaster and he apparently he was the nicest guy. He was still bitter about the Olympics though. I would be to.
It is interesting to note the diversity of Jews with regards to Nationalities and ethnicities.

Deena was of course Deena Drossin before she married. But what is Adam Goucher's real family name? Is it a name change or is he only Jewish on his mother's side?
Yehezkel Halifa was second to Bob Kennedy at NCAA XC one year. He and Dov Kremer were at Clemson.
Joseph Kibur of Ethipia/Canada was the Canadian XC Champion in 1993
goucher is not really jewish. he's christian, according to an article published a little whie ago about salazar and his runners
A number of years ago, Marty came to our rinky-dink library to give a talk and sign his then new book "The Fastest Kid on the Block". He talked about how the anti-semitism and racism was so prevalent at the time it was accepted. After the talk, Howard Schmertz, the Millrose director, stood up spoke for a few minutes about Marty. BTW, Howard is also a YID.Was Lon Myers mentioned?
