RunDaddy, who do you support? Who do you think is not nutty? Sorry if I missed it earlier if you already mentioned it.
I'm not sure who to support at this point. I like a few, but they all have plusses and minuses that I haven't fully weighed in my mind.
But, at the risk of being mercilessly bashed, I am leaning towards Obama and I see him finally starting to make headway against Clinton. I am really bothered by some of Obama's anti-free trade comments, and some of his rather naive foreign policy statements. But he also strikes me as a very bright guy who will temper those impulses once in office and when he gains a more informed perspective. Obama to me also has a youthful idealism that I think could be beneficial to the country at this point in time.
On the Republican side, I can only see myself voting for McCain at this point. I don't like the way he treats the uniformed military at times, but I respect his stance against the administration on its detention policy, and with the administration and against the majority of the Republican party on reforming immigration. McCain can be caustic and annoying at times, but he has been a leader in the Senate on many issues.
Finally, while I've been critical of the Bush Administration, I have admired how much it has done for Africa. Through PEPFAR, MCC, AGOA and other programs, I think this administration will be remembered for having done more for Africa than any previous American administration by a long shot.
What I really hope for the country is that we get to a place where we can honestly and respectfully debate issues, and get away from the down right mean nastiness I see on both sides. I am so sick of seeing downright mean and disrespectful bumper stickers about GW Bush, just as I was sickened by the anti-Clinton bumper stickers in the 90s. What kind of a person puts that kind of vitriol about a sitting president on their car? My father was an ardent Democrat and former civil rights worker. He was seriously upset when Reagan won in 1980, but I always remember that he refused to engage in or tolerate any insulting or disrespectful talk about Reagan. He had too much respect for the presidency. He taught me right.
