Congratulations to Baylor and their 7th place finish. I am positive that they would have beat The Woodlands today.
And they had no problem whatsoever with Gardner-Webb.
The winner of the girls middle school 5k would have been a top 20 finisher in the womens college invite.
I don't understand why ACC schools put out such mediocre cross country teams (mens - NC State as the exception). I know they are still better than a lot of programs, but with all the money from football and basketball, you would think they could hire some quality coaches who could recruit and develop these athletes.
For example, UNC. Chapel Hill is a great town, UNC is a highly reputable educational institution, they've been successful with the women. So, why is the men's team placing 18th at Great American? Same goes for Georgia Tech, Florida State, Virginia, etc. All good schools in areas with a high population of good high school runners. Why arent' they producing better results?
I might be acting unfairly, and please don't perceive my questions as sarcastic or degrading. I would just expect those schools to be able to recruit better athletes and produce better teams. If we are going to continue to rely on the NCAA system to porduce our future Olympians, we need to ask why aren't these schools (and many, many others) with all their resources, not doing a better job.
Again, this is not slanderous towards any one coach or team. As a fan and former participant in this sport, I'm merely making some observations based on the GA results. I believe there are enough intellectuals on this board to have a decent dialogue about the lack of development or quality coaching in the collegiate system. For those of you tired of this topic, my apologies.
Middle school girl would have won the College B/Open and 2nd in the College A/Open, and like other guy said top 20 in the University Race.

throw the times out, obviously they aren't exactly on tap, the weather was supposedly bad. some of those guys are studish that ran in the 27's....(yup i made that word up)tech is in a down year, last year they came 5 pts(or 30 meters) within nationals, fsu was painfully closer @ 3 points(or 10 of the same 30 meters), they should be reasonably solid, for the south, again this year. and i believe the college women ran 6K not 5K. you forget duke was a top 25 team 2 years ago, top 10 @ prenationals, ran out of gas at the -25 degree debacle @ iowa state. wake is perenially top 25.
the acc may not be the strongest conference, but for 9 teams its not that bad having 3 or 4 in the top 25 at some point every year?
While obsessions with cross country times is the most aggravating thing about the way so many people analyze the sport, that women's course was definitely not 6k. If so, Shalane Flanagan would have passed through 5k in about 14:50.
first of all conditions weren't really that bad. the parts on the actual golf course were fast, as the grass was nice and it wasn't really water logged. parts that sucked were off the golf course where the mud was thick. basically the course was long, long as sh*t. i would guess 700 to 800 meters long, and i ran in the college race. also, the people that ran the meet sucked, they were kicking people off the facilities shortly after the races ended. oh, and the guy at the Hilton sux for kicking our team out of the hot tub. and the people across the hall that just told us to be quiet suck also. I Am not a balloon expert.
The course was 5000 meters for girls and 8000 meters for guys. I know that for a fact because I designed it. The course was painted (double line) and measured several times over the last two days. This course is by far the most challenging "big meet" course in the country.
In terms of your opinion about the meet management. The races ended right before dark and the Ballatyne staff felt that safety was a issue if people were on the course in complete darkness. This is logical thinking right?
Basically this was a true cross country course. It was so challenging that time is irrelevant. This was about place, beating people, and teams scores. Anyone looking for PR's in cross country doesn't know the meaning of the sport. Track is about PR's, cross country is about racing and beating people.
I am interested in knowing what anyones thoughts are about the meet. If we do suck then let me know why and it will be fixed.
Thanks

Van...you're definately not exagerating. The Duke women pulled down a good recruiting class, but the Duke men are absolutely awful given what advatages a Stanford kind of school (private, well-endowed, prestigious academics) would seem to have. And you're right with the exception of NC State you rarely hear of an ACC team making any noise...and I don't think ALMOST making it to nationals (eg FSU) out of that district is all that impressive.
However, I'm not sure I would go so far as to say that their is a high population of good runners in ACC territory. The region has produced some real studs, but only recently has it been on par with the other traditionally strong areas (Midwest, West Coast, Northeast). Still with the resources Duke, UNC, Wake, GT and the rest of the ACC have they should on the whole be better, or at least significantly better than the SEC (minus Arkansas) which they really aren't.
Wow nAU was awesome. They put on a showing like no other. I'm calling NAU to finish no worse than 3rd now at NCAA's. There are an amazing team with an amazing coach. The coacrse was hard and muddy as crap, wrong place to have a race. Bad views for spectators and a very long walk. But a fun race to watch.

From the start you could get the one mile by walking 50 meters, the two mile was only 50 meters from that and the finishs was only 100 meters from that. You could see the whole race by walking no more than 400 meters. How is that a bad spectatoing course?
As a former Duke runner, I can tell you that Duke has NONE of the advantages a Stanford has. The biggest difference is no scholarships -- there were all cut in the 1980s and given to the women's teams. Duke also has much higher academic standards than a Stanford in non-revenue sports (ie, not hoops and football). If you are top 5 in high school and brain dead, Stanford will slide you in, but Duke won't. Related to this is the fact that a lot of people will AVOID Duke because they don't want to have to actually go to class and take real classes. You can't major in physical education or massage at Duke (the biggest cream puffer major is Afro-American studies). I think the team is doing pretty damn well considering what it is up against. It certainly is doing a lot better than most schools that have $$$, easy admissions and 4 years of gut classes.

Duke has no male cross-country scholarships. None. In 2000, they were the ACC champions and were ranked as high as 12th. In 2001, they finished with a 14th place ranking. Currently, we are ranked 18th. Absolutely awful? What team has this much success with no scholarships? Do your research, dude.
Schneider is on money. Unless you want to consider that a track scholarship, which is what ALL XC scholarships are anyway.
Nice race for Nick also with that 29:29 and being 8th man for the Dukies.
That's what happens when you go to a traditionally strong school with great coaching like Duke.

No, that's what happens when you have a bad race. Never had one?
Hipp,
You ask are opion and you get all pissed off and say that isn't how it was when we say it. The coarse was not spectotor friendly. Sorry, you think it was. You had to walk a mile just to get were people were running. Then the views weren't very good. You guys didn't have bleachers set up at the end to watch. But hey, i'm sure you have an excuse for that. All I'm saying is the place wasn't that great. Sorry you thought it was the best meet ever. I guess thats how you feel when you put it on.
