OK we've seen guys like geb, 7:23?, 12:39, 26:22, and an impressive 2:06?? debut...
but who do you guys know who has ever broken 2:10 with "slower" track times? I'm talking sub 2:10 with 14 5k and 29 or even 30 10k? is it possible?

Don't think those times you quote would be possible for a sub 2.10.
Deek had PB's of 13.34, 28.02 and 2.07.51. I think Derek Clayton ran 28.30 odd and 2.08.34.
Bill Rodgers-5000 13:42
10,000 28:10
What about that Korean (Lee-Bong Ju?) who won Boston a couple years ago? He wasn't a blazer on the track, but I'm not sure of his track PRs...
I don't believe Josiah Thungwane the South African `96 Olympic champ and 2:07:28 PR ever broke 30:00 for 10K
wierd for Thungwane, unless he never ran a serious 10k wether it be track or road...
2:07:28 is 4:52/mile while 30:00 is only 4:50/mile!
he must have run some marathons PASSING 10k (or running a 10 km increment) in under 30 minutes nevermind breaking 30:00 in a race
slow 10K times/fast marathon times would include (and these are just the guys off the top of my head) Salvatore Bettiol (29min 10 and a 209 or 210 to his credit, Hiromi Taniguchi (207, mid 28min for the 10, Bert Van Flanderaan (sp? some Dutch guy)...I want to say Bert was a 28:49 guy with a bronze in WC Stuttgart Marathon and a 2:10 pr, Hugh Jones, supposedly Bordin but Im gonna go with no...though it is rare because both being primarily aerobic, running mid to low 28's without any wheels really isn't too hard to imagine. You just better have a huge motor...hence fast marathon times.
Ian Thompson, Great Britain had a best marathon of 2:09:12 and a 14:05 5km and 30:10, 10km.
29:00 10k PR (actually 29 and change but I know it was higher than 29)
2:08:54 Boston Marathon, 1982
Atsushi Fujita´s PRs are
14:09 5km and 2:06:51 marathon
Actually, Thungwane went to the Alamo 10K in San Antonio a few years back determined to get his sub-30 10K. But couldn't do it. Just goes to show how athletes are geared and fueled toward a specific distance.
In that regard, Paul and Lynn Williams (Canadian Olympians) said Ben Johnson once trained with them, and he couldn't jog the 600 meters to the track. Didn't have that gear.
Just curious Oliver, are you Canadian? I always looked up to Paul Williams when I was a teenager and wonder if Americans on this board have heard of him?
Monty
Not Canadian, just know of Paul and Lynn Williams. Lovely people who now have four (?) kids and a very successful running store.
Former GB international Don Fairclough ran 2:12.19 off of relatively modest track times of 14:19 and 29:01. The further the distance the better he was. His training was always geared to longer events and he often used to run sessions like 40X400m. He ran 2:14 in his first marathon when he was just 20!
