I have begun to notice that if money enters the equation in running, such as at the elite level, that athletes are more likely to cheat. Even small instances like cutting courses, so they can gain that extra money at the expense of morals. It's sad to witness such happenings in a once pure sport. Does anyone else believe this assertion? Discuss.

although there is some vailidiy to one of you assertions, when was the last time someone won because they cut the course? Are you talking about running the tangents?
nah, more like cutting over people's private properties instead of staying on the road during a "road" race. Seen it and heard of it happening many a time. The ethics of such a tactic are debatable.

On a high level have you ever heard of Crazy 8's 8k. Happens there every year, and in numerous other races. You'd be surprised what people will do for the smallest amounts of money. Greed has captured our society.
Theoretical race with 2000 people and 8 or 10 sub 30:30 guys. $1500 prize money. Who do you think "cuts the course" more as a percentage -- the top 50 across the line or the other 1950?

When the LA Marathon had the $$$ 5k with it in the '90's, this happened all the time. They televised the race and you could see the leaders going through people's lawns. Hate to say it, but fair call by OP.
Except that it happens in EVERY sport, so it's weird to single out runners.
