Running with screws in the ankle

The issue is more if the joint surfaces have been disrupted. It is very common for a racehorse to return very successfully with screws in their legs as long as the joints are OK.

I have 2 screws in my navicular and I'm perfectly fine.

Not enough info. If you truly have screws in your ankle joint, then you'll never run again. Where exactly were the screws placed?

well i dont the actually term of it, like i said the doctor told me nothing and im pretty dumb when it comes to biology, but the lower part of my inside ankle, that looks like a small little bump lol. it turned around 180 degrees so they went in and turned it around and put two screws. i hope that helps

Did you have a fusion/arthrodesis??? If so you are DONE! Find out what the proceedure was ASAP

I have screws and a plate on the fibula at my ankle from a fracture due to slipping on ice in 2004. Had the cast on for 6 weeks, then rehab for several weeks, but by 5 months after the injury I was back on track. Ran NYCM 10 mohths after the injury.

So hopefully your situation is like mine. In hindsight it was a blessing - I never take running or good health for granted any more, and have gone on to do to IM's.

I had the identical injury & surgery as "bmas" in November 1991, kept in shape with a cross-country ski machine, raced well the following spring and have never had a problem with the ankle since. You'll be fine. Be optimistic.

No, my ankle never bothers me at all now. It took about two years for the swelling to disappear, and to regain full range of motion. But now, three years later, I can hardly tell which ankle it was.

It was torture for a few months of non-running, but it's awesome now, and I love every run (7 marathons and 2 IM later).

In addition to the plate & 7 screws on the outside of the left ankle, I had surgery to stitch up the deltoid ligament torn during the same injury on the inside of the same ankle. The fracture of the fibula and tearing of the ligament often happen simultaneously as the deltoid tries to oppose the excessive pronation of the foot that occurs during such a fracture.

I also had some persistent swelling but that went away a long time ago.

Try to keep mobility in the joint as much as possible so it does not freeze up.

After the rehabilitation I felt super strong due to the rest from pounding my legs and the powerful cardio I acquired from the cross-country skiing. I continued to cross-train with the cross-county ski machine for years for the cardio and upper body & core strength it provided.

I think you'll look back on the episode as a badge of honor and with a smile.

Has anyone had a subtalar implant (EG. mba implant, hyprocure, etc..) and still run on it? This is not fusion arthrodesis, but rather arthroereisis where they place a titanium stent in your sinus tarsi cavity to restore your arch and limit pronation.

I\'m on stress fracture / reaction #5 over 7 years due to overpronation, my orthotics no longer work and my orthopodiatric surgeon is starting to think these are the way to go - but the point is so i can run more than 4 times / week again, not so i can\'t run ever again.

Broke my fibula and seperated the ankle joint. Plate and 9 screws, 1 long one is through ankle. Dr said that's the only one that needs to be removed. Injury happened playing soccer but running is my passion - races and tri. Every article I read says have it all removed :( very discouraged 5/8/2017 - in 1st cast 5/25/2017 - ways to go till weight baring.

I broke my ankle at the age of 16. Broken fibula and torn ligaments. I have a plate and about 6 screws. I had cast for about two monthes, and then physiotherapy for a few monthes. I came back running fully without any pain at all about after 1 year. Today I have no pains at all and I run long distance, and in better shape even before the injury and still have all those screws inside. Make sure you do all the physiotherapy and work all the range off the ankle and you will be back even stronger. This injury although looks scary and nasty is a very simple one to take care of, unlike knee problems.

And this was 21 years ago. And I have no pains whatsoever, and in the best shape of my life today. So cheer up!!

I don't care bout the articles. If you don't have pains afterwords, and back in full shape. Leave those screws in peace. I have, it's been 21 years.

I was in a very serious car accident Feb 28 and fractured my ankle in three places--had a pilon fracture--ficture in at first and then surgery. I have 3 plates and 19 screws in ankle. I just started to walk after 4 months being non weight bearing and on crutches now as the pain is really bad. I was a very decent runner and ran huge long distance. I also broke my back and had a fusion of L-4-5 and S-1. I am reading good things and a lot of bad. I am doing lots of PT, riding a stationary bike and waiting to swim once my scab is gone on right ankle--it was an open fracture and the scab is where the skin is very thin and where it was the worst damage. Will I run again and can I run fast? Thank you for your responses and for hopefully being positive.

Hi suffered a maisonneuve fracture 3 months ago I can walk for a mile a 2 I still have swelling and my range of motion well moving it up and down is in normal range side to side is not there yet I can’t jog yet I can do squats lunges to some degree claf raises when I’m fresh. I have 2 sysmodic screws above my ankle and a little wire working as a ligament to hold my fibula and tubular. The fracture on my fibula below my knee has fully healed. I just wanted to know if anyone was familiar with this and had any tips or advice. I refuse to give up and be able to run again.
