go on ebay and look for arm warmers. especially under 'cycling' they are really popular... or go to any cycling store, they have those...
check out some biking or some tri sites. I think those are often used by bikers.
just dont do it.
pretend you are 10 years in the future looking at old photos. it wont be pretty.
you just know hall/ritz will be looking back thinking, "what was i thinking when i put those on?"
trust me. i lived through the 80s.
Just buy some really tall tennis or basketball socks and cut the toes out. Buy these at a cycling shop and you'll pay at least $15. Make them yourself for $2.
I just realized watching Ritz. He really needs to stop being so over-dramatic. Makes him look very girly.
was it really that cold out?
dude, I can think of plenty of things that could serve as half sleeves.
But they usually involve womens clothing. Not that you would mind.
I would only wear them if my upper arms were covered as well and it was 30 degrees outside. I think if you're running under 2:15 for a male, you can wear whatever the heck you want to, but seriously 99% of the runners out there don't need these. Just another advertising gimmick to make slow people try to be fast by spending money.
I have them from my biking days. Great for the early part when it's a bit chilly and then you can take them off. Did that this morning.
I agree. It seems like there is a rule out there saying elite U.S. runners have to look like dunces to compete in public, i.e. speed suits in the 5k, half-sleeves, etc.
I know most don't care about appearances, but a lot of these guys look ridiculous.
These are cycling arm warmers, if u cut up socks or other things they bunch up and end up down at your wrist.
the real arm warms are made of lycra, keep u warm, do not get soaked with sweat etc
bikenashbar, performancebike or have them
for the DeFeet also make a good arm warmer that come in colors other than black & a little lighter material
Moeben Sleeves
http://www.zombierunner.com/store/moeben_sleeves.html
These are $32 for the pair, and some (all?) have little pockets for (e.g.) iPod, etc. Running-specific, not cycling arm warmers.
They don't look nearly as weird if you wear them with a short-sleeve shirt, since they go up to about where the sleeves end.
From the site:
"Check out the new and very cool Moeben Sleeves, created by ultrarunner and ZombieRunner friend Shannon Farar-Griefer. Take them with you whatever you do and whatever the weather. Designed for comfort, protection and a bit of fashion, these versatile tubes of custom UV-protected fabric are made to be used and abused. Enjoy!
Each sleeve has a handy pocket perfect for a gel packet or small iPod.
Stylish black!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Moeben Sleeves are designed for use in all types of weather and can help protect you from the sun, rain, cold and wind. They are made to take care of you, and all you have to do to take care of them, is simply slosh in a mountain stream and hang over branch -or- wash in cold water and line dry, no bleach. Either method will usually remove blood, sweat and tears."
Gotta disagree about the bunching. I've done this numerous times in marathons and never had a problem. Plus, once I get warm I toss them to the curb. If I pay $30 for them I'd be reluctant to throw them away.
This fashion statement is gay. In cold weather you want to keep your shoulders and upper arms warm not the elbows.
Please don't wear white tube socks on your arms during a cold marathon. It's bad enough that people wear trash bags.
Just find out where Allen Iverson shops- there's your answer.

and guess what happens when you keep your extremities warmer? that's right, more blood for the shoulders and upper arms.
use socks or something. the concept is a good one, as others have pointed out. they're good for when you're going out for a long time and the weather is going to get warmer. but paying for this stuff seems pretty excessive to me. the point is to take them off after it gets warmer. when you're on a bike, you probably have a place to stash them and maybe it makes sense to have something that's a little higher quality that you can re-use. running - especially during a marathon race - i'm just not seeing it.
The arm warmers were obviously worn so the athletes would have the option to discard them during the race. Both Ritz and Hall started with hats and gloves, but tossed them early.
These are elite athletes trying to peform at their best in cool/cold conditions. If any one of them (or any competitor who cares about maximizing peformance) thinks "I don't want to do that, it looks ridiculous" and chooses fashion over function, they are absolute idiots.
They should choose whatever layering (hat, glove, arm warmers) are going to give them the greatest flexibility in controling body temp, while being lightweight, flexible and functional.
With regards to cost, I think $10-$40 in gear is expendable to ensure both comfort and performance in one of the most important races of your life. Even the average runner, doing one cold weather marathon a year can probably afford the expense. Think about how much the average person is going to spend, anyway, in entries, travel, and potetial hotel/meals.
Mine are lycra. Don't know how much they cost; it was years ago. You can pull them down to your wrists as you start getting warm, and when you know you won't need them again can simply tuck them into the shorts. They're very light. There for the days when it's a little too warm for long sleeves but not warm enough for just a singlet or short sleeve. Like today in NY.
