Mark Wetmore hands down.
How the hell could you compare the two. I think they are both excellent and have had much success
It is hard to compare the two. Many will think of Smith as a XC coach, but if you look at what he did at Oregon, he really beefed up the entire team and made it competitive. A lot of the NCAA points were his doing.
He has been bringing Oklahoma up as well. OU will have it tough in the distances because the conference is deep and OU is not a preferred place for distance guys.
Damon Martin...not martin smith
Both are great coaches, but my vote goes to Martin.
This is in NO WAY meant to demean either Wetmore or Martin, but Martin Smith-coached teams have won four NCAA XC championships. His Virginia women and Wisconsin men each won twice. All three are really great distance coaches.
Wetmore's Colorado xc teams have won 5 times: 2000 women, 2001 men, 2004 women, 2004 men, 2006 men
Damon Martin's Adams State xc teams have won 17 times
men: 92,93,94,98,03
women: 92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99,03,04,05,06
Wetmore is clearly in a tougher division but both coaches know how to win.
As a clarification, the ASC titles in '92 & '93 were under Vigil, while the '94 title was technically under Kiernan, despite his efforts to ruin a great program in just a couple of months. Luckily, the guys remaining from the Vigil years knew how to win, but the program tanked soon after the '94 title until Martin took over a couple years later.
I know Martin and was on the first ACS Men's team he coached while Dr Joe was in Seoul for '88.
Martin is a Great Guy.
I do not know Wetmore. Wetmore seems to get high school runners that are more developed and ranked higher nationally than the high school recruits Martin gets... Runners also seem to have more injuries under Wetmore.
If you compared each on how much their system improved the recruits that they started with... Based on what I know... Martin would win
Hopefully a rabid CU fan does not run me down during my run tonight.. ;-)
Martin has tapped into international resources with the addition of 2 or 3 Kenyan athletes to his men's team this year. Has Wetmore ever recruited foreign athletes?

Martin is a strange guy to speak with. However he does know how to win,but Wetmore is hands down "the man".
