OK this is gonna be a long one so I can try and keep as much details as possible:
Myself and another runner have run almost identical training since May (6 months) and week in week out we run the same quality workouts and same quality races. If she has a bad day I know that theres a 90% chance I'm not going to run what I wanted to. We both followed a Lydiard-like program of base training til late August. In May we built our mileage. In June and July we ran the following minutes Mon - Sun: M:60 T:60-90 W:120 R:60-90 F:60 S:150 Sun:60(striders after). It wasn't until late August that we incorporated intervals on Tuesdays and occasional Thursdays. The rest of the team ran intervals and less mileage the entire summer...
Our Tuesday workouts are hard interval workouts such as 800s 1000s miles or hills. Every time we run these workouts we are above and beyond the rest of the team.
The next workout day is Thursday, this is usually a tempo run with some speed work after (Ex: 25 min tempo followed by 3x300m at kick pace). On Thursdays the rest of the runners have an easier time keeping up with us.
Race day AKA Saturdays we end up either neck and neck with the same runners or losing to them. WHY IS THIS? For example I did repeat 1000's on Tuesday and was ahead of the next runner by an average of 5 seconds. That same guy beat me by 45 seconds in a 5K today and thats the way its been all season. My coach told me today that its just mental and that I can run a lot faster than I am.
WHY are we so far back on race day but can kick their butts in workouts on Tuesdays. I asked my teammates if they run Tuesdays easy and they said they try hard and still can't keep up with me so its not like they're just running easier on Tuesdays. Usually I would just pass it off as mental but someone who trained identical to me is having the same pattern so somethings up. Any help appreciated....
