Although the 180 strides per minute figure is taken as gospel truth by many, it is patently absurd to think that a tall person with long legs should have the same stride length or rate as a short person with short legs.

Does the 180 strides per minute apply regardless of pace? My understanding is that the initial study looked at elite runners in competition (800m-marathon) and found that they all had the same stride rate. This seems to suggest that to some degree pace doesn't matter. On the other hand, for an elite runner, even marathon pace is ~5:00 miles. I have a hard time imagining running, say, 7:00 miles at 180 strides/minute, but maybe this is because of problems with my form?

I think it is regardless of pace to a point. I'm an admitted "slow" letsrunner. My normal long run pace is only about 8-9 mpm (I know all the other letsrunners are shaking their heads in disgust). Anyway, I typically have a stride rate between 180-190 strides per minute. I think one of the above posters discussed height differences. He might be right. I'm only 5'6 and have a short, quick stride. Now, I do find it hard to believe that someone running over a 10 or 11 mpm could run at 180 strides per minute.

Wow, 180?! I am at 160-165 whether at 8:00 or 5:30/mile. The length is larger but the frequency is the same even when I'm concetrating. I just started running again though after many years, and when I was running 4:30/miles, I didn't count. I'm sure it must have been close to 180 though. Maybe I just need to get stronger and faster so the frequency will pick up?

watch the fifth avenue mile on flotrack and count the leader's strides for 10 seconds. it's pretty close to 210, so I disagree with the idea that stride rate same the same regardless of pace. bekele looks like he's turning over quicker than 180 during his 10k record on the track, but I haven't tried to count that so I may be wrong.

the 180 stride observation in daniels book was based upon a study across a wide range of distances. possibly a little more scientific than looking at one race on the web...

but who am I to say, you're probably right and the experienced coach who carried out the study is probably wrong...

to think you could only be bothered to watch 10 seconds to calculate your incorrect refutation of the observations of a well respected coach.
