Chicago Marathon- Where were you when they ran out of water- Unofficial scientific poll

I think you're asking this question on the wrong message board. Nobody here will ever admit to being slow enough to have been with the masses that got to the water stops too late for water. The information I've seen elsewhere would suggest it's the 5+ hr marathoners who didn't get water at some of the early water stops.

This is a serious answer - I don't think you'll get any useful data here. You should probably try the beginners' and intermediate runners' forums somewhere else, like maybe RWonline.

This is the result I am anticipating, but I'm curious to hear firsthand from people running 3-4 hours whether they had enough water. Or, to think of it another way- before all the news reports completely trash the marathon, I think some definitive evidence (not that this thread would be definitive in any way) would be nice. If they decided to stop people at the halfway mark at 3:30, they could have been responding to the realization that, in fact, there wasn't enough water predicted for these slower(er) runners for the entire route. Thanks for the suggestion for the other boards, though- I may hit those up too, but I need to get some data from both ends of the running spectrum.

I ran the Chicago marathon last year. In the post-race revelry, while trying to locate my dad, I made a wrong turn, exited the runners area, and was not allowed to re-enter. Because of this, I missed out on the post-race beer. I'm still rather depressed about the whole episode.

1. I didn't see any stations that were out. In many cases, you just had to proceed to the later tables.

I didn't see any water stations that were out of water. I did see volunteers abandon trying to fill up cups and instead they were pouring water out of jugs on top of people and into their mouths.

Previous best 3:01, previous worst 3:25 - this was my ninth marathon. I fell over at 22 miles and hurled in the grass for an hour or more. Over my objections, some people in the crowd tried to get me help and came back to say that the medics were too busy helping others to come by. I finally got up and trudged to the finish. That's right, I'm a loser.

That seems to be the real reason why they had to cancel the race...not enough EMS. 400 people taken to the hospital will do that.

There was an official with bushy moustache in his mid 50's that spoke with an english accent that was rude as hell. I over heard him in the lobby afterward ripping apart the competitors that ran over 4 hours. He said and I quote "If you are going to run that slow you don't need water"

Of course, what would they have done with 45000 sub-4 runners? Would that have helped them fill the cups? Seems to me the problem is the number of runners, not the speed of the runners.

On the water stops, I wasn't out there but people that I know who were said the problem was actually early on. It wasn't that after a certain point there was no water it was that there was no water or Gatorade for the first 10k-1/2 marathon for some people.

I know several people that ran or at least started

this year's race. Three that have wrote a brief

description of the race did not mention lack of

water/gatorade. They finished in approximately 5:00,

4:30. and 4:00 respectively.

The above three runners were fairly likely to run

around 3:30 under ideal conditions.

For those of you (I have read on some other threads) who even mention the idea of moving the Chicago marathon to a later date, I would probably punch you in the face if we were in person. October in Chicago is LATE ENOUGH. We had some FREAK weather this weekend, but changing the date would ruin the race in the future.

Just 3 days after the marathon it's 48 degrees and windy. It feels like the dead of winter to me today after the weekend of 90s. October is like that, and I'd say the majority of the time 48 and windy is what you're going to get on an October day in Chitown. I have no sympathy for people running 5 hour marathons and complaining about the conditions, the course, or the preparations...clearly they themselves didn't have the proper preparations to complete 26 miles faster than 11 minute miles...or walking pace. If these people trained through the summer, which they claim to have done, they would have definitely done some long runs in 90 degree weather...How many people have water stops every mile of their long run? Not me.

All water stops were full of water and gatorade. Ran through 2 or 3 water showers and got a nice cold wet sponge.

Finished in a crawl of 4:27. No problem with water or Gatorade. No cooling misters however.50 years old

My two daughters were in the 5:45 pace group. One from Florida (25) and probably didn't run a total of 5 miles before the race, and the other (21) from here in chicago that probably only ran 60 miles total before Chicago.

They were turned at the 18 mile mark and told me they didn

't see water the first three water spots. They never whinned though like most of these idiots that want to sue and get poeople fired. They learned a better lesson Sunday than if they were allowed to finish.

Took 1 water to drink, 1 water to pour over my head, and 1 gatorade. Never an issue. I actually was soaked head to toe from open hydrants in the last 3 miles.

Goal was sub 2:30

Finish was 2:43

Age 31

Last year's race was 2 weeks later, towards end of October rather than start. Much better to run in 38 degree temperatures than 88 degrees, or haven't you figured that out yet.
