Coaches Notes: Women's Cross Country
The women's cross country team finished 2nd to Virginia Tech at the Colonial Inter-Regional at William & Mary this weekend. The team was led by junior Melissa Grelli's 2nd place finish in 20:34.6 on the 6k course.
With four of our potential top five runners not competing, this meet provided a great opportunity for the underclassmen to step up and carry the team. Sophomores Lise Ogrodnick, Lauren Gregory, Kelsey Malmquist and Renee Tomlin completed the Hoyas scoring five runners, all with their best cross country performances to date. Ogrodnick had an outstanding race in her first return from injury, placing 10th in 21:42.3. All four sophomores are reaching a level where they can make a very significant impact by the Big East Championships.
Seniors Maggie Infeld, Elizabeth Maloy, Joanna Rodgers and junior Natasha LaBeaud are all making outstanding progress in coming back from injury and will run their first race at the Pre-NCAA's in Terre Haute, IN on October 13th. Our mantra with this team is making sure that we are at our best for the Big East and NCAA Championships while using these early meets as preparation. Thus, not racing these four allowed them to continue their training and also give the underclassmen the valuable experience of racing knowing the team performance rests on their shoulders. All four have been All-American or NCAA individual qualifiers in the past year and, when added with Grelli and the rest of the team that ran at William & Mary, make an extremely deep squad that has the ability to run with any team in the Big East and NCAA.
I'll be in touch after our next meet, and as always - GO HOYAS!
