I know it is optional, but I think it is quite unnecessary for Active.com to ask for a Social Security Number when registering for a race. Does anyone know why they'd do this besides using it as a unique identifier?

Who knows why they are doing it, but I sure as hell wouldn't give it to them.

definitely a scam. Take a screen shot of the page and email it to active.com and ask them if that is their SOP. I assume that you have made sure that the website you are viewing is active.com and not something close.
or just enter 123-45-6789 as the SSN....
