Obviously, yes.
He's already got a gold, so the pressure is more or less off. He will be quite elated and have very high confidence going in, which makes him very dangerous in the 5k, more dangerous than before. He will have to go through the heats, and fatigue from the 1500 rounds will play a factor, but he has proven to be an absolute master at conserving energy and qualifying with the least possible effort.
Basically, a very similar situation to what El G had in Athens...hopefully these WC's turn out the same for Lagat as they did for El G!

What does he have to lose by not running? Even if he comes DFL, he'll get the benefit of the doubt (insufficient recovery).
-
also, sihine will not be there.
-
He declared for the 5, why wouldn't he run? If he didn't and I were Riley I would be pissed that I didn't get to run when Lagat could have opened a spot on the team for me.
-
Of course Lagat should run. A chance like this rarely comes. He will be relaxed albeit a little tired, but he is one of the best runners in the world

See individual results, dude is strong. Beat some hitters.

those pac-10 results are amazing...just look down thru the names:
Lagat, Keflezighi, Peter Gilmore, Jason Lunn, Abdi, Johnathan Riley, Asmerom, the Hauser twins.
all have had pretty good success, I'd say. Some more than others obviously. Strong year for the pac-10, huh? -
I think Christian Belz also ran around 8:10 in the steeple and 13:10 in the 5K for Swizerland at some time. Not sure on the times, but I know he got fast and was a some world championships.

I see Michael Stember in there too (50th)!
Steve Moreno of Cal (36th) I belive is qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon.
Quite a field indeed. -
Looks like Meb came back to beat him over 10K, but still impressive.
