But he didn't win the 800 in '80 or '84 Games... that matters more.
I don't recall the races but if he used those tactics that would expplain why the Word Record holder was not able to win Gold on either attempt.
We know his fitness was good because he won the 1500 in both years.
In the Moscow 800m he literally froze - it was his first Olympics and in his biography he admits that he was overwhelmed by the occasion suffering from terrible nerves and the presence of Steve Ovett. Ovett in those days was virtually invincible. In Prague in 1978 Euro Champs Ovett had beaten Coe pretty easily after Coe had run a suicidal 49xx first lap. Ovett was hopelessly boxed throughout the 1st lap and if Coe had made a move Ovett would not have been able to respond. However, Coe ran a poor race and salvaged a silver with a fast last 150m.
In 1984 Coe tactically did everything right but Cruz was too strong for him. His 4 runs in the 800m were awesome getting faster each round. After the Olympics Cruz ran under 1:42.5 3 times in a week with the fastest just missing Coe's WR by .04 secs underlining his supremacy. Remember in 1984 that Coe was coming back from illness which had ruined his 1982 and 1983 seasons. However, he would have had to have been at his very best to have beaten Cruz who was a worthy champion.
