Rapid City doesn't necessarily have a ton to offer, but drive 20-30 minutes to the Black Hills and you'll have tons of dirt trails, dirt/gravel mountain roads and the mickelson trail (crushed limesone). The Black Hills are somewhat of a gem as far as running goes. Elevation ranges from 3500-5300ish in areas like Lead and Custer.
Thanks for the info. I checked out the Mickelson trail. It looks like you need a pass. I need 10-15 miles Saturday morning. Which segment would you recommend?
You dont need a pass or to pay. They never check.
I've only ever run on the Mickelson Trail for the Deadwood Half-marathon, but it was pretty great. Whenever I'm in Rapid City for the weekend, I usually just run on the bike path that runs along Rapid Creek (parallel to Omaha St downtown). Not too great but if you can't get out into the Hills it's alright. There are also a number of other routes on USATF's site that you might want to check out.
Any of the trailheads are nice. You'll have scenery and mile markers whereever you go.
