I like to wear water shoes. I have the Vibrams but I don't like the individual toes. It is a comfort issue for me. I do real well with the water shoes. I notice that I can run faster at a lower heart rate. My recovery time is much quicker. I did 21 miles this past Saturday and felt great yesterday. When I use to wear shoes I felt like crap for several days. Another bonus is that water shoes are on clearance racks right now. I just another pair of water shoes for $2.00 that I will be wearing when I run in the Chicago Marathon.
The key to barefoot running is to run without pounding. Make sure your feet are landing slightly behind your center of gravity.
The best/safest surfaces for learning correct barefoot form are the newer synthetic fields with the tiny black rubber bits added to provide cushionong. The surface is soft and lacking of holes.

Just got my pair of Sprints tonight. I've been wearing them around the house. I'm looking forward to the first run with them tomorrow evening. Finished my longest run to date barefoot - 6.5mi, about 1/2 on asphalt 1/2 grass. Someone asked "what's the point?" - well, it's just fun, and my feet feel super-strong now.
