check out the steamboat springs running series. the spring creek memorial trail race (9 mile) is awesome- coming up at the end of july. there are plenty of great places to run in and around steamboat springs, and because you're at altitude the temps are cooler.
What about running there during the winter?? Any plowed trails or areas that are good for running. I am there for a week in February.
Plowed trails? Hahaha!
Rent some snow shoes for a week and call it good. If you know how to XC ski - then ski. Otherwise, you shouldn't think about running much during the winter.
Thanks for the lack of help. Since I will be training for Boston I will be running. Why not think abut running? Do they not plow the roads out there?
I have not been there in a few years, but used to go up there often from Boulder.
You can run just as easily as anywhere else in the winter, does get cold though. There was a dirt road parralel to the road coming into town, can't remember the name, but it was plowed and nice for running, very little traffic. You can also run the roads around the ski village, always plowed and usually in good shape because the skiers need to get there, just go before the mountaim opens to beat the traffic.
Start the week out with the Wild West Relay and then spend the rest of the week running around the town.
Thanks. Thats more what I am looking for.
December alone 100+ inches of snow in Steamboat - good luck running there. Rent snowshoes or XC skis - don't plan on running there.
I used to live (and sometimes run too) in Steamboat. Depending on the season, there are different options. In the snowiest of days, the river bike path still gets scraped, and neighborhood roads are more than accomodating for running. Although you will tend to go 'up' one direction and 'down' the other. IN the summer, there are the old standby's as Spring Creek trail (all dirt and pretty shaded) which eventually connects to Buff Pass (trailhead near the HS) and runs all over Howelsen Hill (downtown) and then runs on THE ski mountain of Steamboat. If you want a drive, then there are plenty of trails off of Rabbit Ears Pass, but they would only be snowshoe-style in the winter. Unfortunately, in my experience, not too many options for winter running other than concrete or street. I just tried to ski my ass off in the winter to stay in somewhat shape.
try cross country skiing, but if you must run the best bet is the core trail along the river... they do plow it in the winter.
the steamboat touring center has 10km of groomed snowshoe trails you could run on (with snowshoes)
