Maybe Nick Willis should pace him to a 3:46? Nick could easily run a 3:44 himself these days.

Looks like it was done just for Alan.
Lukezic will be lucky if he can run 400 meters at Webb's pace.
Chicken lover, what is your problem? Chris has been ill for the last week with bronchitis. I don't know if he will be well to run this race on Sunday.
May I ask how you know this? Also, I assume Ritz and Abdi will be trying to run under 13:10, which would mean low 7:50s for 3000. Will Dobson really be able to do that after the 1500?

Its in the start list.
http://www.acbreak.be/Docs/Deelnemerslijst%20hoofdprogramma%20AV-meeting.xlsIt seems Like Myers may be rallying this summer. Ran 3:36 at adidas, 3:36 at Lausanne, and 3:37 in Sheffield. I don't see him on the Brassadt start though. Is he done for season?
I admire the talent and determination of Webb to go for the AR in the mile. However, why risk flaming out prior
to the World Championships?

How is 1 race going to cause a "flame out"?
can someone post the 1500/mile/5000 start lists to this thread. i don't have the spreedsheet reader.
Flotrack will have the race.

Some people think you only have so many all-out, 100% efforts per season.
Does anyone know what happened to Lukezic this year. Last year he ran a 3:33 1500 and now probably won't even beat Fountain, a runner very much Lukezic's equal.
Alas, we had the highest hopes for Lukezic when he made the World 1500 meter indoor finals last year. Then came two consecutive 3:33 runs the following outdoor season.
The main difference now and in 1982 is that back then Scott and Maree had great backups like the upcoming Jim Spivey(3:49mile), Tom Byers (3:50 mile), and Todd Harbour (3:51). There was also 5k expert John Gregorek (3:51 Mile) that could be called on for the mile.
Obviously, Webb will break 3:50 Saturday. It is just a case of by how many seconds. We have waited a quarter century for this day. Scott set his record during the summer of ET and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It was that long ago.
He won't flame out. He has five weeks to recover after the race.
I think Webb, Manzano and Lagat happened to Lukezic.
Otherwise, 3:36 at the US Trials makes the team any other year.
I also just noticed that the year wasn't over.

I hope Webb gets the record and think he will in the near future, but this race set-up for him doesn't seem like the best way to do it. Having competition around him would really help instead of just having 2 rabbits pace him through a time trial. Maybe the crowd can give him an extra boost but I think he has a better chance of setting the AR in a race with competition.
Lukezic has run under 3:35 a handful of time. He will be back. In the era of Stember, Lunn, and Berryhill, Lukezic would have won the trials!
I still think Myers is more talented.
All the best to Webb in this attempt.
I agree that on paper the rest doesn't seem like the ideal setup, given that no one is going to push him to it after 1200m. On the flip side, Webb seems to enjoy being a front-runner, so he wouldn't necessarily need (or want?) someone to pull him to the AR.
I looked at history to see how many mile times run faster than Scott's 3:47.69 were set in races where no other finisher broke 3:50. It has happened 7 times (out of 22), and only 4 times where no one else broke 3:52.
Morceli did it three times in 93, including his PR and the former world record of 3:44.39 in Rieti. Goes to show how far ahead of the competition he was that year.
Aouita did it twice, in 1985 and in 1987. Ray Flynn ran a 3:51 in his 1985 race.
El Guerrouj did it in Nice in 1998--El G ran 3:44.6, Rotich ran 3:51.x He did it again in London in 1999, Laban Rotich ran a 3:50.79 in that race.
9 times the second place finisher has at least been in the ballpark--the consummate example of this being the El Guerrouj-Ngeny duel in '99 where the WR was set. Scott had John Walker and Ray Flynn to push him to his fastest time, which was just off the world record back in 82.
6 times a "sub-Scott" time was run by a 2nd or 3rd place finisher... hard to imagine running a 3:46.7 and finishing 3rd...
I don't know how this analysis would look if we used a similar method for 1500m races. There would be more races to full from, but there's always been more mystique to breaking mile records.
With all respect to Scott, I agree this is a record that finally needs to go down! It was set before Webb was born!
not the "ideal set up?" i beg to differ.
with ideal racing conditions (no wind, nice temp, even rabbits through 1200), webb is very capable of running 3:47 low this saturday.
youtube webbs 3:51 at drake:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gKxqeJcUx-A
he ran that time primarily off strength training. i don't think he could have run 3:30 then. now, with some fine tuning (800m and 1500m pr), he is ready to run 4 sec faster.
DRAKE RECAP
- webb ran the last 600m by himself
- windy day
- uneven rabbiting job (55, 60)
Cram came through in 1:53 high en route to 3:46.
56, 57, 57, 57 = the record falls
The announcers in that drake video were really terrible- the one for sure "Jefferson wants the record for himself" about 5 seconds later jefferson steps off "He was the pace setter, what is known as the rabbit" Man- that announcer was an idiot.
