The fire academy itself wont really effect your training- it gets a bit physical. Finding time to train may be your issue during the program. I went 5x a week for 7 weeks.
When the Fire Academy effects your job- is when you get "the job". It is the greatest job in the world, but when you have to meet your pals in the morning, and you have been up running calls most of the night (we are Paramedics also)- it kicks your butt. Add a wife and child- even toughter. My wife is cool with my running, and my schedule allows me ALOT time with my daughter- but with 10+ years on now in a suburban department, I went from a solid local/regoinal guy 10 years ago, to I am happy to join the guys for the long runs on Saturday. I have given up ALOT (SPEED)in my running since I got the job, but what I have gained with regard to my family and great job- was well worth it. After all, I am still running with my pals-. If I was 25, and a 30-31 min 10k guy, I dont know if I would think that way, but as I approach 40, I wouldnt change anything I have done. You have to look at the big picture. This job is the greatest job in the world. It certainly beats a real job.
