I ran a race in Chicago yesterday put on by a company called Special Events Management. Nike was the main sponsor, in fact, the packet pick up was at Nike Town on Michigan avenue so it's not like they had a shoestring budget. It was called the Bastille Day 5k run/walk and the entry was $28.65, all fees included. 3000 people registered.
Perfect night to run, race started in the west Loop. The only problem was it turned out to be a 4.5k race. The first mile was fine, my second mile split was a minute thirty seconds faster.
How in the hell could these people screw up the most important part of the race? It's not like they measured it an hour before the race. I picked up the packet the day before and there was a map of the course included.
I know setting up a race isn't easy, but how does this happen? Isn't the course double and triple checked? Are they lazy, stupid or retarded?
