I guess since he was born in Kenya he is allowed to compete there... I wonder if he has dual citizenship?
"He achieved the fete after hitting qualifying times in two events during the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia last year. Kenya had until then participated at the Olympics through wild cards."
is that how they spell "feat" over there??
Kenya doesn't recognize dual citizenship after age 21.
he speak swahili?
He is Kenyan born and bred, his 'tribe' happens to be European rather than Nandi or Kamba ! This is not like Lagat or Shaheen with a change of nationality.
The opposite to Cragg then? Who is African born and bred but runs for Ireland.
I bet he does have dual nationality regardless of whether Kenya recognises it or not.
I also bet he doesnt speak a word of Swahili either, ok maybe one or two but not fluent.
Where does it say where he grew up?
He was born in Nairobi, he and his family live in kenya, he has a kenyan passport not a british one, he did his high school in UK and is at college in america. He is a Kenyan.
This profile is not untypical for middle class kenyan families irrespective of tribe. There are still quite a few white kenyans, descendants of european settlers in the 19th and 20th centuries. They dont have dual citizenship and a ticket out of kenya at the first sign of trouble as a descendant of Lord Delamere recently found out !
This is sort of like the case of the first women to win Olympic medals for Costa Rica. They were German blonde sisters.
its not strange to have white kenyans, just like in zimbabwe and south africa.the portuguese were first to settle in kenya in the 15th century.there is also a huge number of asian kenyans, arabs, even chinese etc who settled in a period over 1000years.infact many black kenyan tribes moved in less than 400years ago.kenya is a melting pot of over 60 extremely different cultures and the british were among the last to move in.they created kenya and brought in over 50000 settlers, many of whom decided to remain and become kenyan citizens after indipendence and are known to be extremely rich and prefer being politically neutral, although there have been MPs and white ministers, but remain very influential.best known white kenyans include the Leakey family,Lord Delamere,Jessica Craig-said to have dated prince William.OF the kenya swimming team that he is part of, only 2 are black, there is also a kenyan German. In the kenya team for the african games in algeriaalso has Christian Vitulli in tennis,a kenyan of italian origin, and has represented kenya in all grand slam junior tournaments and Allan Cooper. In cycling,Chris Froome, also white, africas top under 23 rider.Judy Limb in equestrian. Others well known in sport are Ian Duncan,a WRC winner,Glen Edmunds in the Dakar Rally, top female rally driver-Meschell van Tongaren. They speak perfect Swahili better than majority of africans-can see a Swahili essay by the gold medal winner on Stanford's swahili website.Kenya doesnt not allow dual citizen and only kenyans can represent Kenya.Kenya's first athletics gold was by Seraphino Antao, and guess, he was not a black kenyan!!!

I can barely believe you can put together a nearly flawless sentence in English. I'm pretty sure someone born and raised in Nairobi speaks Swahili, regardless of race. Hell my grandfather spoke fluent Swahili and he was white and American.
costa ricans wow 98% of them are a mixture of euro-african indian descent.
kinda of like saying black boy gives america the gold.
Thanks so much for posting that. Very informative.

Uhhhmmm, were gonna have to go ahead and have you come in on Saturday to do some more schooling. You see, the Portuguese were not the first to settle in Kenya, the tribes of the Kenyan region were the first to settle there. That's why they were already there, because they "settled" there first. Your asertion that the Portuguese were "first" diminishes and even minimalizes the culture that was already there, European or not. Shaka would not be pleased.
I have lived in Nairobi, and the reality is that very few nairobians can make a sentence in pure swahili as compared to Tanzaniians or people from the coast.Schools teach in english and only one and a half hours of swahili in a week.
Most of the younger generation brought up in nairobi have very little knowledge of their tribal languages since they have grown up only in an english environment, and created their own language, sheng.
According to the 1999 population census, there were 13000 swahilis in kenya.hence swahili is not a first language to many and so like everyone else in kenya had an equal footing in learning the language!!
Swahili is not just some minor "tribal language," it's been used for a long time as the Kenyan lingua franca. I don't know why you think "very few nairobians can make a sentence in pure swahili," Swahili along with English is one of the two Official Languages.
