gwinnett schools are weird. remember Bobby Reyes? his native lanquage was spanish and he failed spanish at Dacula. but Girma comes to gwinnett schools from Kenya/Ethiopia and cant speak a lick of english... but passes english to be eligible for high school sports.
I never said he wasnt a good runner. i said that it's not fair to classify him as a high schooler. lets call him a great young runner and look forward to see what he does in the future. dude is 19 going on 30 and all he knows is running. lets not compare him to high school kids.

I turned it on by accident around 7:15 tonight and the top women were just starting to finish. It seemed like every top femail had some idiot running with her wearing a black T-shirt that said "RACE ESCORT" and carrying two American flags.
What the f*** was that? Do these guys just jump in the race at the end to "escort" them to the finish or do they run the whole way with them? I doubt most of them could keep up with Katie McGregor and the others. Do they do this every year? I have never seen this in a race before.

I have been a race escort for two years. The escorts begin to run with the top 15 females at 5k to go(at the top of the hill). Basically, you are there to keep track of the top women, help the crowd spot them out(some look like men), and take them from the finish to the elite tent area. It is tough trying to keep up with those women...they are fast! I was the #5 runner but had to switch with the faster escorts because they were getting dropped. I ended up with the #3 runner and we were right a 5 min for the last mile. So, the job is to help keep track of the female athletes and also to help the crowd spot the women.

Trust me the Hansens are not all that concerned until Moen finishes within 5 minutes of Sell for the marathon. If Moen runs the trials in the top 5 the Hansens would have made a mistake. If not, probably not a lot of sleep lost.

Hanson's are doing a pretty good job with the second level runners. Some of them become pretty good. But at the end of the day they are still just pretty good. Josh Moen is NEVER going to be anything other than pretty good, with or without the Hanson's. It is not like we are talking about an Olympian here. We are talking about a D3 guy that has NEVER broken 14 min for 5k and NEVER run a marathon. Where does that put him?

Since Josh Moen is not a marathoner and he is not a 5k guy, then he must be a 10k specialist. Which one of these guys has he beaten in the 10k? Hall doesn't make the top 10 in this event and he beat Moen by over 20 seconds. This list doesn't even include Ritz.
When I posted I was going by what I heard on the online coverage. They missed mentioning quite a few names, or at least I didn't hear them. I was really happy to see Jason Lehmkuhle place as well as he did.
The escorts do the last 3 miles or so. They carry flags numbered 1-15. The crowds actually appreciate knowing where the first elite female is, and the other elite females benefit from being able to identify where their competition is among the male runners. This certainly helped the girl in second who was able to home in on first in the final half mile (although she was eventually held off).
We don't interfere with any of the runners and are not there to pace anyone. Most of the escorts are either high schoolers who can get a cool experience out of it, or local runners who maybe missed the entry deadline or just want to support the race without actually racing it. So what if most of the escorts couldn't keep up with some of the elite women for the whole race. I doubt most of the posters on this site can run under 32 for 10km (I will exclude myself with a 29.31) so I don't see the relevance of that comment. Personally, I swallowed my pride and decided to help the race out because I am relatively out of shape. For what it's worth, three of this years escorts are sub 2.22 marathoners.

How many languages do you speak? Ever tried studying science or math in swahili? Give it a shot and then come back and talk about what the kid does or does not know. He\'s already seen/done more in life than you have and is undoubtedly going a lot further.
