I was living in San Diego and preparing to deploy to the Middle East. June and July 97 were intense training periods. August was mostly down time. I left on 5 September, a Friday I believe. The whole week before I left was dominated by the news of Princess Diana's death.
Guess I was in high school back then..
I was a High School teacher in Green Cove Springs Florida. I haven't taught since that year, but I'm getting back into it next school year.
I was in summer school at Woodberry Forest in VA taking Algebra 2.
Back in those days I was deep in the NYC graffiti scene, rolled down Flatbush Ave with my people in stunt bikes, I never heard a second of Radiohead (which is one of my favorites now) and altogether lived a very different life. Damn, time goes by faasssttt.
woodberry- did you befriend any sheep?
i quit ADP...
gave them my 1 week notice
BWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
97 was a very stressful year for me, and the first year that my running went downhill, aged 35, never to return to previous heights.
I'd quit the Regular Force Canadian Military and had become a Reservist, biding my time, wondering wtf to do with my life. A long term relationship ended, and a house had to be sold. It didn't sell for a long time, causing much stress. JZ helped me to make it bright and shiny on the day that an offer was finally made! :)
I entered my "dark period" - made some bad decisions, became a loner, listened to Radiohead and Pearl Jam and NIN.
It all turned around 3 years later. But the summer of 97 was definitely a turning point for me. Hearing OK Computer again brings this all back. But I can smile and say I came through it, and learned a lot, and now my life fvcking rules, hahaha....
Summer of 97, we moved from the west coast to central Canada. I left behind a great working environment and entered a shitty one. I quit the new job after 8-9 months over concerns about corporate ethics in an office I was responsible for, took a couple months off slumming, then started four years of work as a federal public servant. Definitely made the right choice.
High point that summer was probably stopping at the dinosaur museum in Alberta (Drumheller) on the way across the country. Our kid was 6 at the time, and a HUGE fan of dinosaurs.
Oh - I wouldn't recognize Radiohead if it hit me over the head. Sorry. :-)
Didn't know who radiohead was at the time but now I do and this is one of the all time great albums
Thats f***ing amazing you can still access the internet with a 10 year old computer.
I was about to enter the sixth grade, and I was about to be taken over by a Final Fantasy obsession (thanks to FF7's release in Sept, 1997) which would dominate the next couple of years of my life.
I do remember the night Diana died. I knew it was important, but I guess I still don't truly understand its impact because I knew little about her when she was alive, and I can't understand her cultural impact.
Beginning of my last summer of unemployment, babysitting siblings was my job. Kept a spreadsheep of my hours on my moms Mac so I knew how much I was owed.
This was the summer after my first year of running, so I was still very naive about my training- 2 miles a day, 5 days a week. My longest races were only 2 miles, so why run any farther. Also played soccer on a terrible, terrible house league team. I think we scored two goals the whole season.
I wasn't really listening to music much at this point- my dad turned me on to the Beatles later the next year and I got my first CD player. Abbey Road is still one of my favorite albums.
Summer of \'97: My best ever 8 days of track. One Friday at Zurich, where 3 WRs were set (800, steeple, 5000); the next Friday at Brussels, where 2 more were set (5000 and 10,000).
Moved Pittsburgh PA -> Lower Manhattan NYC. Went to work on 103rd floor of WTC for Cantor Fitzgerald. Luckily the job sucked bad, so I was outta there in five months.
At the time all I could think was "another damn baby, no sleep for three months." Now she's a wonderful funny strong-willed 10-year-old.
I went to Yosemite in the summer of '97, something everyone should do once in their lives.
I also saw the Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach, a painting of which had stood in our Connecticut home (who knows why) for decades. I was chagrined to find that now, only a very elaborate series of steel cables prevents it from tumbling into the sea.

No I did not. I only went for summer school; I wasn't really a Woodfairy. What school did you go to?
