Studies have been done on this, and the reason Americans don't get out of their cars and would rather eat in their cars has little to do with laziness.
I've heard the results of these study several times on television and radio, so no I don't have a link for you.
Three main reasons:
1) Americans love their cars and would rather be in them than not.
2) Americans are becoming increasingly non-social and would rather be alone during their lunch hour than have to deal with people.
3) Americans love information and entertainment and would rather listen to music or talk radio in their cars than sit in a fast food restaurant. They can also talk on their cell phones in their cars and have privacy or feel that they are bothering others.
I think a really good idea would be to have a restaurant where the booths are cars. You even have to open the door to get in. It has a radio you can listen to and a microphone to place your order. You could even spray the smell of car exhaust around. And the best part is that you can just throw your trash out the window. Wait, no, the best part is that if you put a dollar in the slot the windshield will display the streets of some exotic foreign city where you can drive around running people over while you eat. Yeah, that would be cool.
