I suppose the point of this thread for me is to fantasize about getting an athlete with that kind of talent.
But the upshot is that I, as a coach, probably should look a little harder at each kid's strengths and weaknesses.
I already run 5-6 training groups for a team of 35 kids. I just don't know if I would, in reality, be able to hold this kid back and keep him healthy. Obviously the desire for me would be to run him with the top guys on the team, because he would be beating them all in races.
As a matter of fact, whenever I have a talented freshman or new runner that beats my varsity guys in races, I feel like I will have a mutiny on my hands from the older runners. Their logic is something like this, "he beats (or keeps up) with us in races, why doesn't he have to train as hard as us?"
