Gabe in the Big Apple

Apparently he had a problem with some guy who is on the fringe of the Farm Team (I think his handle here is "The Who"), passing on every bit of gossip he hears on the Stanford/Palo Alto front. It's not good policy to pass on all of the dirty laundry of those you live amongst.

Um, well I run 70 mpw through Central Park, and haven't seen him. But if I do I'll be SURE to keep everyone updated............

i've seen him in central park and randalls island this week. didn't talk to him though.

i too have confirmed sightings of gabe jennings in the big apple within the last week. good stuff to have him in the east.

Yes, there's a wrong way on the reservoir. Get with the program or get run over. There's not too much room on the reservoir and tons 'o slowpokes. Passing on the left is tough enough without some idiot coming the wrong way.

Gabe also noticed at the Rockefeller State Preserve.

I can run in whichever direction I want (especially when doing speed workouts at sub-5:00 pace after dusk) and if you don't like the crowds - stick to the bridle path.

BTW, does Gabe really live in the Village because I am there every day and haven't seen him at all?!?!?

I could be wrong, but I thought I spotted another ex-stanfordite in central park one evening on the bridle path running at a fast clip. Looked like Julia Stamps to me. I called out "Stamps?" and she responded with a "hi there" without a break in pace. Last I heard she no longer could run due to an accident a couple years ago. Anyone know her status as to running? As for Gabe, great to hear he's out there training, weather in ny or cal.

Yes, you are correct, Julia is now living in NYC but not competing. Just one more proof that East Coast is better than Cali.

Let me slightly deviate from who was seen where in Central Park and the correct way to run around the reservior.

I recently moved to NYC, am working on the Street but also training 70+ for the marathon here this fall. I finished eligibility a few years ago so my training level has still remained high, but working so much now I find myself running the the Park after dusk. Are there any places to seriously avoid in Central Park at night? I see plenty of runners around the loop(s) at 7, 8, even 9 o'clock. I work in Midtown so any other suggestions to avoid the god awful treadmills at NYSC would be appreciated-

The further from the Harlem Meer the better. Try to stay in well-lit areas not just to avoid getting killed but also to avoid busting your ass on rocky/rough terrain in the dark. The reservoir loop is relatively empty after dusk and well-lit, so you can cruise around the big pond if you like looking at the skyline in the dark.

When I sometimes run kind of late (9PM) and get jumpy about being in some parts the Park, I stay at 72nd St transverse and below, on the road there, or on the sidewalk around the rperimiter (tough running surface but not as isolated).

Run anywhere you want before 11pm. I've been doing it for five years.

I was assaulted once at 7:30pm on the main drive in the south end of the park. Just bad luck. Could happen anywhere at anytime in this city.

You can run in Golden Gate park any time of day or night, no worries. You have 5 million people fighting for space on a dirt trail around an inner city stinkpot reservoir, I have hunderds of miles of trails within a couple of miles of my front door...ha ha ha ha ha ha, you gotta laugh just a little.

yes, and when it is dark at 9:00 and i am running 5:00 minute miles in the correct direction and can't see your ass coming around a turn i will knock it onto the bridle path. elitist snob - like running 5 minute miles is some big accomplishment.
