I googled his name and put together the results I could find under his name. I also used this site for the IAAF cross-country results:

He was a guy from Ethiopia who won a big Cross race in '83. Really there isn't much more to say. You could substitute any of a number of African runners from the last 30 years and have them win the race and be just as mysterious.

He was much more of a willowy runner than most of the Ethiopians today. Tall and slim like Bikila.

I remember a picture of the '83 race with Lopes and Debele racing side by side, with 16 years of age separating them.

We will never know how good he was because he peaked at a time when Ethiopian athletes were not allowed to leave the country. After the famine of 84 the gov cracked down and no one could leave. if ethiopia was open as it is now..he coulda posted better times. here is what i dug up.

Prior to kenenisa bekele he was the youngest XC champ. He won the 83 WXCH at 8 days before his 20th b-day

10k PB was 27:49 at the helsinki which he ran in the heats. he finished 10th in 28:11 Here is a photo

He also ran 28:02 in 84 and finished 3rd in a meet that was arranged after the communist countries boycotted the olympics.

13th in 89 wxch (that was his last race i think)

According to one online post at this blog.. he died recently (probably after 1998) on the war on the Eritrean Front. I have nothing to confirm that.

i have his 10000 semi from the worlds on tape, he was well outkicked by Mamede on the last lap of a very competitive heat and he was never a really significant factor in the final. He DID run great in the 83 world cross against probably the greatest X-C field ever assembled at that time.

Ethiopian athletics was affected by the terrible drought and war during the 1980s and after 83 there was, with the exception of Mekonnen's 1988 wr marathon, no consistent world class athlete from that country until the start of the 1990s.

You mean Dinsamo's record. At the time of Belayneh Dinsamo's. Abebe Mekonnen was also a pretty big success. He had over 10 sub 2:10's to his name from 86-92

He ran boston this year as a masters athlete and i believe he finished in 2:44... crappy weather. I am sure he is capable of 2:30's still.

He is a very inspirational guy. I remember when i was a kid... everyone would talk about how abebe mekonnen won the xc national champs in bare feet... everyone saw that as a sign of the next abebe bekila.. but alas! he never made it to the olympic games.. and when he did in 92 it was too late.

But apropos of this point, there was an era where Ethiopian track runners made virtually no impact after the group of Yifter and Kedir retired and i think it was Abebe, who got Olympic bronze in 92 who heralded the new generation, but for some time in the 1980s Ethiopia was in the track wilderness.

It was also coinciding with the development of their women athletes. She never gets much recognition when "GOAT" female athletes are mentioned but for longevity, impact and geographical, cultural and gender significance i think Derartu Tulu deserves much more credit than she currently recieves

This discussion is very interesting. In 1983, Debele must have seemed poised to be the leader of the next generation of Ethiopian distance runners, but it was not to be.
