Because they can earn a hell of a lot more with Nike or Adidas or Puma or etc...
I wasn't aware that America's best distance runners are earning a hell of a lot more than $100,000 these days.
Wow times sure have changed. Good for them.
You should recognize that the 100,000 is a MINIMUM salary. The runners in the Hansons program will probably make much more when they run those times. I have seen the performance bonuses.
It is a great offer and would be very competitive with some of the better contracts out there.
The question is, will the better runners join Hansons?
As of right now, they look to me to be like some of those colleges that have the great facilities and perks but don't quite have the more important things.
Hopefully our top runners see it differently.

Instead of "when", it is more like "IF" they run those times (minus Brian Sell).
It looks to me like they have everything. In addition to the best financial perks, the have done an outstanding job of developing unkown collegiate runners into national and international class marathoners.
The best ones are making a lot more than $100,000. And maybe they don't want to be in Michigan. Mammoth and Flagstaff seem to be working out for people.
Chula Vista/Mammoth vs. Michigan? I would take the pay cut bc in the end it's where you are more motivated and for some terrain motivates. You would have to take my shoes to make me stop training at the end of the day if I were training with the Mammoth group.
It was stated on another thread that the purpose of the $100k was to help educate the public. The Hansons want a larger number of college runners to realize that you can make a decent living running. The purpose is not to take athletes that are already in a great situation.
Hansons are smart at working the publicity. It is funny how many people have asked me if I read about this yet. They announced it in Boston and everyone know 2 days later.
Make no mistake: this whole thing is aimed at picking up a certain VERY talented runner who has good reason to be disgruntled with his coaching/traiing situation right now.
"If I'm back home, I must be in Michigan!"
Does his name rhyme with Schlitz?
Don't you think Ritz left Michigan for a reason? Have you ever endured a winter, or a summer for that matter, in Michigan? $100,000 is probably the minimum enticement needed to attract some talent.
factman you are an idiot. The 100k is not a MINIMUM, if anything it is a maximum. (although not really)
The Hansons "say" they will reimburse a sub 2:11 sub 28 minute 10k guy if they don't make 100k from there contract, appearance fees and race winnings. Brian Sell is the only runner on the team who has run those times and he already makes over 100k, so nothing has been given out.
The Hansons bros promise their athletes a lot of things, some happen, some don't
Name a sub 2:11 guy that makes under 100k with everything included (contract, appearance, race winnings). I can't think of a sub 2:11 guy who doesn't.
If you think you can go to Hansons and run sub 28 minutes (according to their contracts you would also have to do it east of the Mississippi aka no Stanfords or Mt Sacs), you might want to think again...ask the guys on the team what they think of the 10k training.
I am a former teammate of one of the current guys so I know all the ins and outs and that's just how it is.

.
They don't honor a contract? Why haven't they been taken to court? It sounds like you are either one of the guys that they wouldn't let in or one of the guys that are probably on your way out. A lot of people are jealous of the Hansens publicity. You sound like one of them.
I have read your jealousy on other threads. Who cares? I don't know how many males this attracts but I do know that there are a bunch of females that meet the criteria that are making less than that kind of money.
I have never been promised anything that I have not been given. I am happy with my training.
East of the Mississippi has nothing to do with the $100k. That is a completely seperate bonus. The sub 28 can be run anywhere in the world.
Last time I checked there are a serious number of above-average college runners in the state of Michigan on a yearly basis, all staying and training year-round.
Ritz is from Grand Rapids and they receive more snow than the East side of the state. I don't know what you mean about the summers. It is great running from March-November. The other 3 months are hit or miss. I think that a portion of that the Hansons hide in Florida. Wimps (just kidding)
