It surprises me how many elite runners prepare meticulously for months, paying attention to every little detail and then eat out at a restaurant the night before a big marathon. In Deena's postrace press conference she admitted to suffering from stomach cramps and needing a pit stop to deal with it. In her Flocast interview she also said that she had reservations at an Italian restaurant in town, and would be looking for a nice pasta meal, maybe something with pesto and salmon. After all those months of preparation, and only one or two marathons a year - something so important as the dinner before the race is left to chance.
She's not the only one. Many elites do this and suffer for it. Meb got bad cramps after eating a bad meal at a restaurant the night before, and Paula complained of stomach cramps due to an undercooked meal at a restaurant.
The dinner before the race is not a culinary experience - it's fuel. It only takes one bad meal to ruin months of training in a race. Why don't these runners take their (tried and tested) fuel/meal with them and ask the hotel (thru room service and for a fee) to cook it for them. They could bring their own pasta, ask for it to be cooked in nothing but boiling water and add a tin of tuna and olive oil themselves in the room. And this is something that they can practice time and time again before race day - finding the best fuel for their bodies. Yes, there's a possibility bacteria gets in or something could go wrong - but it's better than the crap shoot (pardon the pun) of eating whatever's on the menu at some random restaurant.
