holy lord this is a 400 time from march. we don't even know if he was fresh/ just finished a race before this. it means absolutely nothing.

why are you comparing chad hall's speed to that of world class runners? 51 second speed in march is very good for a guy thatll probably be running 5 or 10k in college.
This thread is about Chad Hall. And I meant full mile/2M.

That is, if you're talking about 1600 and 3200 times....

This is southern California people. Back in the 60s when I was in HS I remember our 400 guy running (dirt track) a 49.0 440, a 1:57.0 880, a 21.x 220 and long jumping 23'6" in February in the first two meets. 51.72 just does not seem lightening fast to me. I was a distance runner that ran a 55 440 and was only good enough to be 7th man on the JV XC team; track was out of the question because there were too many guys ahead of me. There is a big difference between 55.x and 51.7, but there is a bigger difference between the FL champ and the 20th best XC guy on a team that just made the Southern Cali XC meet (finished next to last in the final?).

i don't either.
and it's funny to me how many people apparently believe that 51.7 for a foot locker champ is impressive. he's obviously a superb runner with a great future. but 51.7 is not impressive. maybe when you take into account all of the circumstances - march, not doing speed training, not a particularly important or stacked race, ran the last 15 meters backwards, etc. - it becomes impressive. however, on its own, a 51.7 400 for a FL champ in his senior (?) year of high school doesn't tell us much about his potential ability in the 1500 - 10k.
OK guys, don't beleive it, but those are my PB's 55 and 3min49sec. It's not that unbeleivable strength is your friend.
To clarify, 51 is not awesome speed. But for a young 3-5km runner that is more than handy speed. Most 51 Guys would be running a 1.56 800m and a 4.25mile, but here's a guy who can obviously run a zippy quarter but is still strong like bull. He'll do good.
Geb....split 46.2, open 800..1:46, Open 1500...3:31 and so on, but lets not get carried away with a HS guy compared to Geb. 51.72 is just o.k.. I personally as a HS runner split 48 and ran 15:37 5k cross country so it's not impressive to me, but lets wait and see. Remember, it's early in the track season.
How fast do you run the 400m/800/1600m.How old are you.
BRD ran 51.9 FAT as a sophmore
I think it's pretty decent for this early in the outdoor season. I'd be willing to bet that he could split sub 50 in a 4 x 4 by the middle of May and that would put him right up there with his middle distance running peers.
Work on speed early and often!!
Yeah, as a 400 guy myself, I can tell you that aint shit! I ran 51.96 when I was 14 years old (turned 15 a month or so later, but still...)
51 is a decent time, but considering the level of talent he is at he needs to be able to run that fast or faster, ii know he is more of a longer guy, but a miler needs to be able to run close to 50 flat, this kid is a tremendous talent, its not that outrageous though that he ran a 51, most good distance runners can move all the way down to a 400 they need to be able to. im willing to bet that BRD can run very close to 50 flat.

For a Footlocker Champ that is damn good, don't even pretend like it's not. It isn't a great sprint time for a sprinter, true, but Chad is not a sprinter. Wouldn't you be impressed if Asafa Powell ran a 4:25 mile?
A sub-52 is pretty much a prerequisite for a sub-4:10 mile. Running a 4:25 has nothing to do with being a good 100m runner. You're an idiot.
split 48's. Never ran open 400, but in a workout I clocked 49. 800m 1:53 and 1600m 4:16. I'm now 27 and don't run much anymore; other then road races for fun. I'm not claiming to be a better distance runner then him. I only clocked 25 high for 8k and 15:02 for 5k. But like I said earlier, I'm weak in Distance. And yes, I know I should have been able to run faster in middle distance events. However, I never took it serious, especially the mile, which I only ran twice by the way. Running 30 miles a week just to keep my scholarship. Oh, how I regret it now.
I agree. It's only MARCH. This is probably mostly off of winter base and long repeats, no speed work. He won't peak until late May/early June. This is a terrific result!

It's impressive from the FL 5k champion in March in an OPEN race.
Do you people even run? This kid is a HSer and isn't training for the 400.
I'm sure that he's doing basic speed work once a week.

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/the-anatomy-of-a-medal.shtmlThere are also a couple of interviews on the web about Deena"s weight training, with Dr. Vigil expressing the view that the weight program hekped her build up her strength to be able to handle the training (a couple of 140 mile weeks, though that has apparently been cut back since Athens to "only" a max of 120).
Thanks
The Phillips kid headed to Arkansas opened a few weeks back with a 49.7 relay leg (first leg) out of the blocks according to the Coach Skinner fan Club!
-The March timing isn't that big a deal. He lives in SoCal-- there is no such thing as a winter hibernation there.
-I'm more interested in hearing how he raced the 51. Was he outkicked at the end? Was he working his way up from the back of the pack and just ran out of track? That will say more about his talent and balls than the fact that it is March...
-As for the time itself, it means that he is talented enough that he is not precluded from ever developing into a national class distance runner. There are maybe 10 kids in his high school class nationwide who can say that. Give the kid some credit and pray that he doesn't get injured, discover girls, etc...
