For elite college distance runners - is this average, above average, or way above average?

Since when does mileage preclude having decent basic speed? I believe that it was Renato Canova who said that "you don't lose speed running distance; you lose speed not training speed."

Mind you, he's running 51s for 400m BECAUSE he runs so much. That's also about a second slower than Ryan ran in high school.

They say Pre never broke fifty. I would say he has good leg speed. (D'oh.) But his big brother almost broke four in college, so I'm not that surprised.

That's not very good. He needs to stick to distance running like his brother. I'm faster then he is in the quarter by about 3 seconds and I'm a weak distance runner. I'm not a quarter miler either if you were wondering. I'm a middle distance runner.

i think this is a clear case of a high schooler from a mediocre team who's top "sprinters" run about 54 or 55 at best so someone who runs 51.72 seems monstrous. 51.72, however, is not all that wonderful and it not in any way "some serious natural talent".

his brother almost broke 4 in high school, not to mention college (1500 equivalent). 51.72 is a good time on a local level, but i'd have been more surprised if he couldn't run that.

For a Footlocker Champ that is damn good, don't even pretend like it's not. It isn't a great sprint time for a sprinter, true, but Chad is not a sprinter. Wouldn't you be impressed if Asafa Powell ran a 4:25 mile?

wat does matt centrowitz run for the 400?

We've had several distance runners break 50 in the 4 (granted as 4x4 splits). One guy ran like a 15:30 5k.

didn't use blocks either, ran it from a standing start. make sure you calculate that into your equations. and for God's sake stop putting the kid down! he is a huge talent and just because all you no-name losers can't run as fast as he can or never made it to level he is already at doesn't mean you get to talk shit about him! stop feeling sorry for yourselves. as for me, i will probably never run a 400 as fast as he did, let alone a 5000 i'm happy just to see him run well, and a 51.7 for a distance runner is running well. as for the rest of you haters, STFU!

hall was quoted as saying he split sub 50 for 400 when he was talking about the footlocker race and how he was confident in his kick. So I'm not impressed by that time out of him. That time is very mediocre for a top level mid distance guy, even at the high school level
