This guy from Atlanta has placed in the top 3 in the 50-54 age group in 3 marathons this year but never seems to register at any of the check points except for the first 10k, where he usually runs about 50 minutes before somehow cranking it up to finish at right about 3 hours. He also ran a 1:08 second half of a marathon in Pittsburgh. Why would somebody do this? I sure hope is not taking home age group awards.

Report this to the race directors. They need to know more than we do.

2. Are you going to report him? I'm going to send emails to each of the races you listed telling them what the deal is. If happened once, maybe faulty timing. 3 times? No way.

In San Francisco there wasn't any cash for age groups except overall masters which he didn't win and it looks like he jumped into the race 6 seconds too late to win the 50-55 age group.
I ran the last leg of the relay and the folks there were directing all the marathoners away from the chip mats so nobody got a 30K split, but he should have at lest picked up one at half way.
I like how he ran his first 10K around 50 flat and the next 20K only 10 minutes slower. Let's find this dude and kick his ass.
He ran 3:55 in Boston...I guess he missed the T.

This all begs the question....
Race Directors tout chip technology as the be all and end all for accurate and honest race results. They tell us its impossible for cheaters to win if they have a chip on their shoe.
Has anyone ever been DQ'd by a race director because they missed splits? Chandra excepted.

Yes, it happens. There was a case of an older gentleman (maybe a doctor?) in Ottawa who cheated, got caught, and was rewarded with a good size write-up on the evil deed in the local (widely read) paper.
Martin Franklin got busted for that chicanery at the 2001 [JPMorgan Chase] NYC Marathon.
But wasn't Franklin only busted after being outed here or by another runner? I don't think that race officials routinely go through the results looking for missing splits and then ask runners to account for themselves which they should be doing.
If you're missing a split and you can't account for your whereabouts then it should be an automatic DQ.

We take the "Gun time" splits on the first 50 men and women at various markers and then the charts are checked to see if they passed the check points. We have caught a number of cheaters in the Pittsburgh Marathon over the years. If he was not in the top 50 they would have to check the "chip time" data and of course some folks do not always go over the mats.

Well, He came in 61st so therefore the chip system would have to have been used to catch him since the course watch spotters stopped at 50.
