In Florida, middle school has a 1600, no 3200. We also have a sprint medley relay 100, 100, 200 & 400.
Back in my day junior high was 7th, 8th & 9th. Some educator decided 14 year old girls should be in school with 18 year old boys and created the middle school system - 6th, 7th & 8th grade.

In west Virginia we always ran the mile and the 2 mile. When I was in middle school I dont think that I ever went to meet that didn't have the mile or the 2 mile.
in michigan, jr high (7th & 8th grade) we have the 1 mile, 2mile & 4x800. Always have the 4x200, every meet.
While indeed in general the kids are getting fatter the interest for distance running is high at this level. At the school I teach over 120 students go out for cross-country. They host 3 home meets a year and the mile is by far has the most participation, even more than the 100 meters. Now the range is from 5 min to 7:30 but they are out there running.
Put the mile in, let them run!
The middle school my daughter went to ran a "mile" before class every day. It was close to a mile around the school fence. Started a true love of running that continues today. A San Jose California school.
