Anyone get Vista yet? If so, what are your thoughts?
Anyone get Vista yet? If so, what are your thoughts?
all of the engineers here at my school got it a while back. its alright. it looks great. there are a lot of really annoying new things that come with it. some people have had minor problems but nothing too big.
crap
MS has lots of cash in the bank and will likely die a long slow death.
Bill Gates saw the writing on the wall.
The man who headed the Vista project just retired yesterday.
They missed holiday sales, PC manufacturers sold their wares as Vista Ready, but ma and pa don't know how to, and don't want to upgrade.
MS will whip out SP1 quickly to get a few more businesses on board and the real service pack will be SP2 - just like XP, which will really plug the holes.
In a nutshell Vista ain't nothing but an expensive upgrade to do what you are doing already.

http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/17992/page1/10 years ago Steve Jobs and Apples' young, genius tech's set out to make an OS that was "INVISIBLE"! We shouldn't be bothered by messages telling us that our "mouse is plugged in", or "our virus sw needs updating"!
I've used both Mac & Windows computers side-by-side for 10 years in my job as a Graphic Artist. Believe me..."IF" you can get away from the "brain washed" masses and give the Apple a try...you won't look back! Then you will wonder why you suffered and wasted so many years.....rebooting and REBOOTING!!!
One day, there will be no OS! At least not as we now know it. Everything will be application based, as it should be! The OS should act like a butler, open a door, help you get your slippers on, hand you a drink & your mail....AND KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT THE WHOLE TIME!
And Apple is just about there!
Will all my old track/running programs like hytek, and RaceTab work on vista?
With PDA,s Blackberries, PSP, 3G, 4G, etc. it's over for MicroShit. They'll still be around like American Motors is, but have already been left way behind by true innovators. What else is new. No Worries, It's Over

Now that all of the articulate people with Tourette's Syndrome have already chimed in, please allow me to add in my 2¢ worth.
The new operating system is a significant improvement over WinXP, particularly in the security department. For a much more thorough assessment than the one that Phil posted above, take some time to read through this 8-part review written by Phil Thurrott, one of the foremost (independent) experts on Windows...
http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista.aspOSX = Plug & Play
Windows = Plug & PRAY
We've played around with it, and I like it, but...
There's no way we'll roll this thing out to 300+ desktops and users for at least a year -- probably more like two. The upgrade and re-training costs will be massive. Plus, we'll have to go back and check compatibility on some specialty apps that run perfectly now. In short, for us, there's nothing Windows XP isn't doing quite well, so we're in no hurry to upgrade.

I would not upgrade to Vista yet. There are ALWAYS bugs that are found only after the masses have banged on it for a while. Let those who need the latest and greatest be bogged down by problems early on, and then get Vista the next time you get a new computer. It is a resource hog (at least according to my own research), and even if you have a great computer now, Vista will make it not so great.
I'd wait. And in fact I am waiting.

Willy, if you don't mind me asking, exactly what is the basis for that type of assessment?
The hackers are going to tear Vista and Microsoft a new one... Stay away from Vista if you value your computing life...

You should probably stay away from the subject of computers completely, since you are obviously a troll who doesn't know wtf you are talking about.
They always find exploits with the nexest windows systems, it's just a matter of time. This article is just one of many where they have interviewed low level computer hacks who intend to test themselves against Microsoft - sorry bud, but that guy was probably right, I doubt Vista is going to make as big an impact as they had hoped, and I would also reccomend to those new computer buyers to stick to XP for a while - at least focus will shift from there for a few months.
actually... wrote:

Actually... he probably wasn't. Please don't feed the trolls, ladies and gentlemen.
I'm not going to tell you that Vista is bullet-proof, but Microsoft themselves has worked extensively with people who have skill sets far beyond "low level computer hacks."
Just for future reference, not everyone within your target audience will have an online access account with the NY Times web page.
There's no need to have a login account if the articles are fairly recent.
And yes, Microsoft clearly put a lot of effort into this system - or at least one would hope they did (it took long enough!) but as you said yourself, that does not make it bulletproof. There WILL be a rash of viruses circulating designed specifically for Vista within 2 weeks, guarantee.
And actually, Windows Vista viruses have already been developed, it's not just "low level hacks" that will be looking at this system. People who got the coding for Monad early on have already found many loopholes and exploits with the system.

I work with computers every day setting up systems, performing load testing for certain kinds of software, etc. I've struck out on my own now, but I work with companies that needed their programs tested on Vista, and I've done testing to certify those programs as "supported" on Vista. Many are supported, but depending on the kind of software you are running, there can be performance issues. If you're just going to use it for home use and you already have a beefy system then you might be ok. Even so, unless this product is completely different from any of Microsoft's other operating systems, there will be significant bugs initially. Windows update will help with that of course, but unless you have a compelling reason to switch now, why not wait a bit? Eventually we will all have Vista (except for the Mac people), so why rush to get it?
But Willy, if you work with computers every day, why are you still having trouble with the quoting syntax? ;-)
It certainly sounds like you have more computer experience than the average person does. However, no offense, but nothing you have said has led me to believe that you are qualified to make a broad sweeping statement like "...even if you have a great computer now, Vista will make it not so great." That implies that even a high-end desktop computer will struggle with Vista, and nothing could be further from the truth. Your statement was misleading.
And for the record, there isn't anything wrong with waiting a bit before switching over to Vista. That would be a wise strategy in the vast majority of cases. I don't have any problem at all with your recommendation there, but your original statement (that I quoted in my previous post) could be very easily misconstrued.
