i was wondering if anyone here has ever tried the runner's stick massage thing and what they think about it. is it worth the money? or is there something else that's just as effective that you'd recommend?

It's well worth the money in my opinion. I've had it for 3 years and use it all the time. It's not always convenient to use the foam roller so this comes in real handy. I noticed a trainer using it last weekend during the AFC championship to help a lineman with cramps too. I really like to use it to warm up muscles before and early morning run, and it travels well.
I'm sure the letsrun homeless population will tell you to use a tomato can or rolling pin, but if willing to risk using a yuppie running tool it's well worth it.

Agreed. It's no substitute for a foam roller or PVC pipe if you have quad/ITB issues, but it's great to stick your quads, hams, and calves before a run. Not only warms up and massages the muscles, it also gets your heart going a little if you do it pretty vigorously.
It is very over priced, but yes I would say in the long run, it is worth it.
well worth it. will last forever. i've had mine 7 years, use it several times a week and it still looks new
