any word on who is going to get it???
any word on who is going to get it???
Job has been reposted, deadline is sept 19th...get your applications in. Maybe they bring Dave Maggard back....
who all is "in the running"
Although the job was re-posted, there's little word as to why, or how the initial batch of finalists fared in their interviews. Dee Vochatzer pulled out, so the remaining 4 were Edrick Floreal(stanford), Robyne Johnson(cal), Chris Huffins(georgia tech), and Stanley Redwine(kansas). I wouldn't be surprised if the "chosen one" comes from that pool, even after the re-posting.
In today's SF chronicle Gladstone say's he will make an announcement about the track caching job within the week.....Ok, what gives here deadline for the reposted job is the 19th....
One keg, Any info?
In sum SFGate.com news source indicates Huffins and Redwine are the neck-and-neck co-favorites. Steve Gladstone (Cal AD) says he has definitely not made a decision and the pool of candidates might expand over the next couple of days. He also states he will have a decision in about one week from today or sooner. We'll see if that holds true.
Damn that's spooky--almost simultaneous. That's pretty much all I know too.
Hopefully, I'll find out something tomorrow. Funny, I heard from someone on the search committee that the reason they opened it up again was there were no "Qualified" candidates. I took that to mean they want a D1 head coach ( after Deanne backed out ) not an assistant.....keep us posted. Hell the way football is going maybe Tedford knows someone.
Stanley Redwine IS a D1 head coach (Kansas).
But is he "qualified?"
I have no idea if Stanley Redwine is "qualified". I was simply responding to One Keg's assumption that the job was reposted after Deanne Vochatzer withdrew because Gladstone wanted a D1 head coach (implication being that the other 4 candidates are assistants). And if that were the case, I would think that the new posting would say something about the candidate needing head coaching experience--and it doesn't.
Also, seems kind of odd that Gladstone would be ready to make an announcement so soon after the new posting closes (thursday). That would seem to imply that either he knew all along that he was going to hire one of the original five, but had to repost for some other reason, or somebody else's name cropped up after the initial posting closed. I would tend to lean a little more towards the former, than the latter.
But this is all just speculation, we'll find out soon enough...
Oops! Sorry One Keg, that was Big booper who made the D1 head coach comment...
calbear...whatis your gut feeling about who they will hire...
Redwine is definitely qualified. He built a strong program at Tulsa and has done some good things with Charlie Gruber at Kansas. He also was a fantastic coach at Arkansas. He has been around a while, and also has some great running credentials, giving him an edge by knowing the athlete side of things.
Another question...why would Stanley want to leave Kansas...is the Cal job really going to go somewhere or is Kansas not going to get it done...I just question why...and I do think Stanley would do a good job if hired...
Doug Clark has done good things with Charlie Gruber. Doug Clark coaches the distance runners at Kansas and at Tulsa before that. Redwine is the head coach and coaches the sprinters up through the 400/800. At least he used to.
Yeah Redwine's been around and hasn't really done much of anything.
What really bugs me though is how someone on his side made it look like Huffins was using the Cal job as a stepping stone when the opposite is really the case. Redwine really wants to go back to Arkansas when their current head coach retires in 2-3 years. He's never coached in California or on the west coast and the only reason he wants out of Kansas is because he can't stand their athletic director who is demanding results that he can't meet.
Huffins is committed to making Cal a top program and would stay for the duration. He's also on his way to being a top flight coach. Cal needs to catch him on the rise just like they've done with Tedford as opposed to hiring a mercenary who is at best an average coach.
Go Bears, hire Huffins
KCtrack, let me preface this by saying that I know very little about Stanley Redwine, and am fairly familiar with Chris Huffins. That said, being a slightly biased Cal alum, my gut feeling lies with Huffins (not that my feelings, gut or otherwise, will have any impact on the outcome of this selection process). Although his coaching career is young, he has already garnered a very good reputation as a coach and recruiter. And being a Cal guy doesn't hurt him, I would imagine. Basically, if I'm Gladstone, I've got to decide whether I want a highly experienced/established coach who hasn't produced phenomenal programs/athletes, but has the potential to do so given the perfect situation, or a newbie coach who shows a lot of promise, has ties to the university, has firsthand experience with what didn't work under the previous "regime", and has a personal desire to turn Cal track around. In short, it's going to come down to Redwine's experience vs. Huffins' fire and desire.
Regarding why Stanley would want to leave Kansas, I have no idea. But I do know that the financial situation (scholarships, etc.) at Cal is due to change drastically with the new hire. There are people with big bucks who want to see the program reach its potential who refused to give money to the program while it was under Erv Hunt. So perhaps Stanley is drawn to what the Cal program could potentially become.
give him his props. Gruber, whatever.... Stanley guided Calvin Davis to great things. Berkeley has had problems historically. Sure, a few individual stand outs but they will never be a powerhouse.
i would love to see the return of great meets at the stadium. that could be helpful in their efforts to attract talent.
You may want to re-think the statement about Redwine coaching Calvin Davis. Something tells me that during his best years someone else worked with him. I'll ask someone who knows and get an answer.
In any case Huffins is still the man for the job.
