Guys! I don't hate Ryan. I am not taking away credit from him either. I was just a little surprised because I was expecting an Ethiopian, but only saw another about 2+ min behind Ryan. I was thinking that at the very worst a dark-skinned person should be apppearing in the next couple of seconds as Ryan turned teh corner.

Agreed, let's all get excited over this performance.
I'm excited. This is an amazing run.
YES IT IS! I can enjoy it now.
I believe this performers list is correct-putting his name at 14 or 15 depending on his official time.
1 58:55 Haile Gebrselassie
2 59:05A Zersenay Tadesse
3 59:06A Paul Tergat
4 59:07 Paul Kosgei
5 59:16 Samuel Wanjiru
6 59:20A Hendrick Ramaala
7 59:21A Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot
8 59:27A Wilson Kiprotich Kebenei
9 59:28 Robert Kipchumba
10 59:30A Martin Lel
11 59:31A Dejene Berhanu
13 59:38A Faustin Baha
14 59:43A António Pinto
15 59:47 Moses Tanui
16 59:49A Rodgers Rop
T17 59:51A William Kiplagat
T17 59:51 Tesfaye Tola
T17 59:51A Martin Lel
20 59:52 Fabián Roncero
Congrats!! BTW I think the half is a great race and because the recovery time is shorter elites can contest them more often than the Marathon.
He beat the Olympic silver medalist in the marathon buy almost thrre minutes. Fukk, this guy should move up, and then we might FINALLY get a true native son running a 2:07 marathon or better!
I think it almost a certainty that Ryan will run the Men's Marathon Trials in NYC.
But I digress wrote:

Before we get ahead of ourselves, remember that a fast half doesn't always result in a fast marathon. Todd Williams never got under 2:11. Geb's 58:51 didn't help him win London last year.
Congratulations to Ryan Hall on the race of a lifetime. Even if you never run another race in your life, that's one for the ages! First American under 60 in a half (and not just barely under it either!) is huge!
I was there!!! wrote:
So, I was in Houston being a spectator and saw Ryan Hall crossing the finish line in ~59:40 setting an AR record. But I have a VERY valid reason to doubt this time
I have very valid reasons to believe it it correct.
Monti gave the splits from the press truck, they add up. Houston is a AR (flat) course. He walloped some outstanding runners by almost 3:00.
Hell with Hall moving UP- Meb's 10,000 record is a sitting duck!
Are you retarded? Ryan Hall was 28:18 at 10k and leading the race by more than 1 minute. There were no foriegn athletes in the half marathon as no open prize money. Keep your bullshit to yourself and not on Ryan Hall who is now a sub 60 half marathoner and embarrassed the Hanson brother, who actually stated before the race that Sell could run with Hall. Not in this lifetime, Hall is a track guy with speed and he did break the US 20k record at the World Road Race Champioinships. If you want to claim to have been on the course, not jsut an idiot at the starting line, then state your Fuc.... name, Moron! Ryan Hall ran 28:18 and 57:05 on my watch!!!!! Grow up, the Ethiopian was leading the marathon!!

If it wasn't before, it surely is now.
And to the bloke commenting on Gebrselassie's 58:51 not translating to the marathon, despite Gebrselassie not winning London he has managed to run in the 2:06 range a couple times, more than confirming his status as an outstanding marathon runner.
Haile's 58:51 only converted to his being the #1 marathoner of 2006.
Doesn't this put Hall into the Mottram and Teg great fast white dude category?

While agree with the thesis in general, using Gebrselassie's race at London 2006 is a bad example that doesn't really support your contention. It's clear that Gebrselassie's half marathon time does translate well to the marathon. He just had a bad day (2:09:05).
What everyone has failed to mention is that Hall ran this race solo. It may have been an "out of your head" type performance, but how much faster could he have run with competition?

I never got this "solo" thing that pops up here as if it's a detriment to fast running. It's not. Running solo is one of the easiest ways to run fast times. The athlete gets completely relaxed and "into the zone" when solo.

Great pic. Looks like he's flipping everyone the bird.
Never worked as effectively for me.

It may have been out of his head before the race, but now he's done it, competition or no, and it's "in his head". Imagine what this will do for his confidence to have run this race. Now he KNOWS he can run with anybody in the world.
