How is the running in Irvine?
How is the running in Irvine?
it sucks.
The middle of Irvine is almost all streets. If you go towards inland there are some parks with trails. If you go towards the beach (Newport) there are bike trails. There are grassy areas in some parks at at UCI. There are some running clubs nearby (such as Cal Coast), and lots of road races in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. In essence, there is something for everyone.....and the weather is fantastic.
Where are you moving from?
It isn't Newport Coast...
But there are bike trails throughout the city that are off the road. Most you can run for miles without having to worry about intersections.
There are plenty of places to run on dirt trails too.
You have hilly trails and flat trails.
A girl from Woodbridge won the state the 1600 last year and I think set the sophmore state record and went undefeated and won state title in cross country this year. She is one of the top girls in the nation but hasn't raced the meets after state.
Concordia had both the men's and women's place highly in the national meet in cross country in NAIA.
UC Irvine has some runners.
What area of Irvine are you planning to move to?
you'll learn to love the back bay
What is wrong with the ducks ponds, Hicks Canyon, Shady Canyon, Quail Hill, James Dilley Park, the trails behind the Verizon Center (well they will be gone soon so enjoy them while you can), the trails in Turtle Rock, the trails behind UC Irvine (also slowing disappearing for development) but we have the Great Park with trails around it. Anyone know how the trails are in Woodbury? I hear they are okay.
Irvine Regional Park
Peter's Canyon
Santiago Canyon
Irvine Company Land
In my opinion, these are the best places to run in Irvine. They are in the Northern part of the city, but well worth the drive. Also the Mountains to the Sea trail runs through Irvine.
I just hope you are ready for a very clean, master planned community and you like your houses all painted identical shades of brown. It's suburban hell, to the utmost.
Nice weather though.
You ever run in Fremont or Limestone Canyon?
Shady Canyon > Peters Canyon
Duck Ponds > Peters Canyon
Laguna Wilderness Area > Irvine Regional Park
Irvine Open Space at Bommer Canyon is pretty nice but I hear Fremont Canyon is nice too.
Business takes me to Irvine the 1st two weeks of March. Am staying at hotel on Main Street close where it dissects the San Diego River. There is a trail following the river toward the Duck Ponds.
Can you Irvine locals tell me the best trail/off-road running around there.
Also, any elitish races in Orange County/LA area the first weekend in March.
Any local knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Lived there for 5 years and loved every minute of it. The UCI campus is a great place to run. I used to do loops around the campus (can't recall the length now) for 30-60 minutes. They also have a very large athletic field that's great for tempos or stride/sprints. The Turtle Rock area is also a neat place with plenty of challenging hills. And you can run the paved jogging/bike trail between Irvine and NB. Trust me, you won't lack for places to run in Irvine.
You guys are the best...thank you.
My business trips around the U.S. have improved ten-fold by utilizing the local knowledge of LetsRun.
My hotel isn't too far (directly) from Concordia College...how is the open space around there for running?
Thanks in advance.

Concordia U., if I remember correctly, is essentially adjacent to the Turtle Rock area I mentioned above. So you could do the Turtle Rock loop OR just right down the street on Campus Ave is UCI. I used both, but towards the end I really preferred running on the campus (no traffic, etc.). If you prefer an easier run (i.e., less hills), the UCI campus loop would be your best choice. Have fun - it's a great place to visit and live as far as I'm concerned.
