Wejo, 1988 was huge. King Carl was well known in the U.S. outside of the track family because of the hype and results in 1984. He had delivered on the biggest stage and in grand fashion. Carl was the poster-boy for T&F in the 80s.
Although not quite as big as Lewis, Michael Johnson's '96 performances, particularly the 19.32, was also gigantic. There had been so much hype about the 400/200 double and with it came an immense amount of pressure on Johnson to deliver. And not only did he deliver on gold, he smashes the WR. You couldn't have written a better story. The stadium in Atlanta that night was electrifying from the moment the 200 field came out onto the track from the tunnel. It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it and I'm a distance guy!
