I disagree.....I never went with the leaders in X-C and could never catch up to the lead guys after spotting them 15 seconds or so at the 2-3 mile mark. Of course, it can be done physiologically....but psychologically, it is VERY HARD TO DO.
I would run about even with the leaders after 4 miles, but was 40 seconds down by then.
