Yet another Youkla(UCLA for the phonetically challenged) athlete disappearing into their black hole. We can go on and on about all the great high school runners that went there but what happened to them after their soph or jr yrs? And don't keep bringing up Meb. He's like Jeff Adkinson or Patty Sue Plumer who ran under Brooks Johnson at Stanford. They'd have all three ran great wherever they went, even if they ran at Cal Lutheran or St Mary's in the east bay.

Actually El Raton ran great despite Brooks Johnson. As the often repeated phrase goes about Brooks: He's the only coach who can make a great runner good. Atkinson may have ran alot better at Cal Lutheran with nobody there to mess him up.

I'm not saying that Coach Peterson is up to it, but you certainly can run a successful distance program at UCLA. It is not all about Meb. Look back at the success that Larsen had with the men in the early 80s. Their finishes at the NCAA XC meet:

80 5th

81 5th

82 9th

83 20th

85 12th

The 80 and 81 teams both had 3 all americans. Impressive recruiting and great coaching from Larsen, with not too many causalties from the pavement. At the same time the women's team left countless blue chippers scattered by the roadside but still had some solid NCAA finishes.

Maybe he wants to be a "big fish." Doesn't make sense to me, but I don't know what else could have driven him there. It's not like there aren't other better running schools (UCSB comes to mind) in that area, if he wanted to stay close. He is in a great conference and has a chance to be a standout on a mediocre team. I guess that fits for some folks. Maybe he doesn't want to be a redshirt freshman at Oregon or Stanford, working his way into the top 7 two or three years from now. Whatever.

Big mistake...UCSB would be a better choice or even Cal Poly SLO. If he wants to stay close to home, the Arizona schools are only a one hour plane ride away.

Who wants to go to Oregon, be 13th man, run in the rain, and go to a crappy school in a city full of bearded women?

Look, UCLA's coach (Peterson) sucks. But at least Cybulski will be going to a school with a good academic program (although not as good as Cal-Berkeley's). LA= nice weather, hot girls, close to home.

Well since he chose UCLA dont expect to see his singlet up front. Maybe if he would have chosen one of the upcoming CALI programs like UCSB and CAL Poly since he wanted to stay close to home. Or even ASU

He actually received a full basketball scholarship to play for UCLA. That's what he really wants to do, not run. The Oregon basketball coach told him he had too much running talent to waste on the court. Let's see if he proves him wrong...
