Know of any?
Sean Smith of 98 CU fame. Not necessarily greatness but definitely very goodness. This almost begs the question, is there such a thing as talent? Hard work always produces, a walkon may be relatively unknown but there's no secret to greatness. Michael Jordan, supposedly an unknown before college, but actually the #1 recruit for North Carolina, he was always good. And I'd have to say no one in high school runs in the low 16s without work. In college 25 minutes for 8K, the work has been done.
Sara Fredrickson at Wisconsin. Was a walk on and ended up second at NCAA indoors in 1997 and third outdoors in 1998.
Wiz at Michigan
Daniel Lincoln has never received a dime of athletic money (and Coach McDonald didn't even meet him until after school started).
2 NCAA titles and counting; not bad for an Arkansas walkon.
No athletics money even after winning two NCAA's?!
Is this guy on an academic scholarship or something, because I'd be pissed.
Kelley Delaney -Wisconsin. 9:36 High School
13:56 25th NCAA XC
Scott Strand-Auburn 5:00 High School(or so I've heard)
8:35 Steeple? Sub-8:30 post-college
Dan Nelson - Oregon. NCAA Champ and made two US World Championship teams.
Excuse my ignorance here. But how much would it cost to go to Arkansas for one year? (ie. the tuition cost for a full-time undergraduate commerce student).
PS: I'm from Canada, that's why I ask.
Gee guy, if you are going to act like you have all this information on the Hogs, couldn't you spell the coaches name correctly (McDonnell)?
Arkansas cost about $13K a year with everything included for out of state.
$13k for out of state is dirt cheap, but you get what you pay for. BP - don't look at just the standard "Canadian schools" - ie Michigan, Arkansas, Providence, West Virginia, Iona, etc. Outside of Michigan, most of then aren't that great in terms of academics. And don't be sold when the coach says, "But you're interested in (insert major) and we're ranked all the way up at #5 for best economic choice for (insert major again) in the area!" Do some non-biased research of your own.
brian sell formerly of st. francis. came out of high school with a 10:02 pr, ran 14:02 and 28:58 in college.
Mike Donnoly was a walk-on at PC. Before he left he was an all-american in the 10k.
jim carney had HS pr's of around 4:29 and 9:55. he's run 14:00 and 28:4? within the last few years. what's more, he did his college running at millerville.....a good school, but not a hotbed for developing distance talent.
John Scherer, Michigan
James Carney went to Penn State. They were IC4A champions very recently in track and still have a powerful squad (if you don't know who Ryan Olkowski is, you may soon enough) . . .
carney ran one year at PSU. he ran his first 3 at millersville. his times at PSU on the track were not as fast as his junior year at millersville.
oops. my bad - sorry. forgot carney transferred.
EASY.
