i have the option of getting either one even though they dont make the mayfly anymore, but i have the choice of getting it new off a relative who knows a friend who can get them. Which one is better for a couple of 5k highschool xc races

neither have enough grip for xc, don't even try it, but for roadraces under 10k the mayflys are the best, for anything much over 10k, go with the vaporflys
The mayflys scrweed my foot for about 4 months.
how? i just got a pair theyre so light, have not used them yet
though? what went wrong?
Vaporflys all the way, cushioned and ultra light! Cant ask for anything more, weight the same as the mayflys with more support so for under 10k your might as well wear vaporflys as well as over 10k.
I train in the Vaporflys.....ran 10 miles last night (sub 6 pace). More cushioning than the Mayflys, and will last much longer. Sizing is tricky, though - I typically wear a mens 9-1/2 in Nike racers, but I had to get an 8-1/2 in the Vaporflys to get the right fit.
Another thing i forgot to say. I do ALL my training in vaporfys and have 2 pairs to rotate them. No problems at all apart from the size which i would really class as a problem. As the above poster implies you'll need as much as 1/2 or even a size smaller than normal.
Are the vaporflys really new? I can only find them on a few sites. What do they weight? And what do the mayflys weight? (I think 4.6, is that right?)
the mayflys are a good shoe...the vapor flys do weigh more, no question about it. that being said, vaporflys are more 'shoe' like, so you might be more comfortable in them, but i like the mayflys for everything (on the road), and could definitely see running a marathon in them not being a problem. If the course that you're running on has a lot of pavement, id say go for the mayflys.
But according to several websites they both weight 135 grams? And i own both pairs and there doesnt seem to be a difference in weight :S
There is really nothing at all to the Mayfly. THe upper is super light weight parachute silk or something! THey are for running in a straight line for guys with very good mechanics.
I'm thinking about buying these shoes for an upcoming marathon. Has anyone tried to race a marathon in these shoes?
bump
I thought the vaporflys were totally different, more built up and a much higher heel. Care to add on this? I like the fact that the mayflys are sleek and the midsole is relatively flat all the way thru doesn't look like it with the vaporflys.
If the vaporflys are as flat as the mayfly I would appreciate that tougher upper they have that will last longer.

Yes, I have, and so have lots of others, with happy results. If you're comfortable doing long distances in a lightweight racing flat (and not everyone is--depends on your mechanics) then the Mayfly will be as good as an Asics DS Racer or a Nike Kantana, and lighter too.
no i am going to use it for rcing but havent even startted to train in them
