If the Olympics where in August/ September time 1980 then a
12 April 1981 birth would be about right.

His mom was single when he was born in 1981, which can't have been common in the USSR at the time....

I think he was having some problems with his girlfriend's family after the 800m final, or so I've read a few times, and he wasn't in the best frame of mind for the 1500m. Also a sense of deflation at having won Gold and achieved his dream, getting worn down by the heat, and perhaps the onset of a cold that he had a week later (when losing the 5000m to Treacy). Having to run a fast 1500m semi because of Straub (his own fault too for trying to preserve his unbeaten run), and then him effectively turning the final into an 800m race with his long kick. Not much went right for Steve in Moscow after the 800m.

The scary thing is Ovett is out of shape, if he was slim, they would look even more like father & son.
Freddy quit track when he realized that he would never be as good as his older brother.
